The harem anime’s that have “happy endings” usually end with the main character marrying the member of his harem that abuses him the worst

Nate and Lisa on Six Feet Under. The way it happens is really sad and dark, but they never should have gotten married in the first place. Put this in a spoiler tag next time 🤬🤬🤬 lmao

Don from "Broken Flowers". He doesn't find his son and ends up being the same sad, lonely guy from the beginning. Emphasis on "same", because I can't imagine him being broken from it. He just returns and continues on.

I'm sure there are those that thought Jack and Janet would end up together by the end of Three's Company, but that went nowhere.
Also, Beast Boy and Terra on Teen Titans.

This is what I despise concerning sequels made decades later. You get informed that people you invested a ton of emotion into only had around a year or so of happiness. If you want conflict between characters let us see it develop on screen instead of telling us they have had a totally shitty life for the last few decades.

Blue Steel: Clancy Brown’s detective character dies after Jamie Lee Curtis hooks up with him, but in the end she goes gorilla and takes out the killer who was stalking them in what I think is one of the underrated 90s action movie shootouts.

The Breakfast Club - Brian was the only one still alone at the end, and cuts against John Hughes’ usual geek-gets-the-girl rule.

I get why it had to happen, but it was still sad to find out that Egon had fallen out with the rest of the Ghostbusters and lived the life of a hermit until he died.

While I did like "Bad Boys for Life," there were some elements that I didn't like about it. While I am iffy about this twist: {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}The villainess's son being Mike's (Will Smith's character) son as well. I didn't like how it was set up because of the timeline. That's not what I am going to talk about. What I didn't like was how at the end of "Bad Boys II," it seemed that Mike and Syd (Gabrielle Union) would end up together. However, in "Bad Boys for Life," it was said that Mike had dumped Syd in all that time (it was a decade and a half). However, my only guess was that because Gabrielle Union reprised her role as Syd on "L.A.'s Finest," it was not only to show that her relationship with Mike didn't last, but she had also fallen in love with another man before the events of the show. Also, there is this plot element: {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}It turned out she was previously pregnant by the man who she fell in love with, who was her colleague in the DEA. She ended up losing the baby while on a case. The two former lovers reunited on the case, and the former lover was revealed to be one of the main villains of the first season.

If we're including stand alone movies and whatnot...
I'm surprised no one mentioned Casablanca, that's like the gold standard as far as I'm concerned.
Kind of a change of pace, but surprisingly Conker's Bad Fur Day has a rather depressing ending.

The Breakfast Club - Brian was the only one still alone at the end, and cuts against John Hughes’ usual geek-gets-the-girl rule. Funnily enough, Pretty In Pink doesn't end with Duckie getting the girl because test audiences didn't like the original ending where he does end up with Andie. So that one kind of fits his rule and subverts it at the same time. FWIW, I think the "correct" ending is the official one where Andie ends up with Blane. Pretty In Pink is my favorite Hughes movie, but the original ending would have fell so flat for me and I'm glad he changed it.

Congrats Frodo, you saved the Middleearth!
Now enjoy your irreparably scarred soul and crippling PTSD that will drive you away from the friends and home to sail into the West with a crazy old wizard who knowingly sent you on a suicide mission.

In Hughes’ movies, they end up with a different girl than the one they were originally after (this happened to AMH in Sixteen Candles). Brian still ended up with nobody.

I guess to me that's not getting *the* girl. He wanted Andie, and that's not who he got. Not that he came out a loser, mind, but he still didn't actually get what he really wanted. I do see your point about him being all alone and that being different, though.
