It really should not have been hard at all to just go, "It was an inappropriate joke in a different time, I shouldn't have done it, I apologize," but apparently doubling down 17 years later is the better play for some idiot reason. That's just it for me. All you had to say was "Yeah, it was a different time and I realize the genre's evolved since the times when everything had to be changed to cater to a western audience etc" but no, what has now happened is that my timeline is being flooded with a lot of X-Play clips where the 00s era of discrimination, not even just to Asians but to a lot of different people and even people as simple as cosplayers, is shining widely through and, like...you could have avoided all of that if you just said that. This and his bizarre transgender rant from a few years ago made me surprised G4 brought him back at all for the reboot.

"We all know who will replace us -- India, the billion strong, faux-vegetarian, tech support call taking behemoth of a nation -- or the Chinese. But certainly not Japan, because while they may be technologically advanced *and* financially powerful, they are already in decline." Yeah, that lead in might actually be worse than Adam's bit.

Part of the context from the time period shortly after this is that many Japanese companies were struggling with the move to HD titles, made ill advised attempts to Westernize, and were generally seen as losing relevance in light of the rising Western AAA game scene. Even American indie developers (who were becoming quasi rock star figures in their own right) were criticizing the poor quality of contemporary Japanese titles. This would start to change circa 2012-2016 before being obliterated in 2017 entirely, and much of the scene has been dominated by the same Japanese companies once seen as irrelevant. Not an RPG but a good example of this progression is the Resident Evil series. The chase of Westernization led to titles like RE6 and Operation Raccoon City, two of the least liked titles in the series. Games like the Revelations subseries started to rehabilitate the franchise until they struck true gold again with RE7 and 8. Also the entire Back Half of Inafune's career, which his been one misfire after another, after another.

When Scott Bromley made his Final Fantasy rant at least he refrained from racial jokes, only problem is that he made crude remarks that have aged terribly.

I mean, Sagi and sake doesn't rhyme. They do when you try really hard to make a shitty joke and also don't know how Japanese words are pronounced.

James Stephanie Sterling has a good video about this (well, not Sessler being a cynical piece of garbage so much as the discussion about the term "JRPG"), including examining their own previous biases on the term and perception of Japanese games in general.
(language warning of course)

It's funny that JRPG is considered a dirty word when many series have used elements of them at this point.
Oh, and Sessler sounds like a dick-sneeze.

It's funny that JRPG is considered a dirty word when many series have used elements of them at this point. Oh, and Sessler sounds like a dick-sneeze. It's a mostly benign term now, especially with the resurgence a lot of Japanese-developed games made the last few years. But the American and European games media weaponized the term to paint Japanese-developed RPG's as behind the times or obsolete in favor of RPG's developed by the likes of Bioware and Bethesda. And that got back to Japanese developers who don't split "Western" and "Japanese" RPG's and just tend to see them all as RPG's without the geographical divide.
Like such a great point in the Sterling video is people feeling insulted when people use "JRPG" to describe Soulsborne and Pokemon games. When they are literally Japanese RPG's (Japanese Action RPG's in Soulsbornes' cases). Hell, Pokemon is basically E-Rated Shin Megami Tensei, and MegaTen is the series that moral crusader types thought Pokemon was. And then you have games like South Park: The Stick of Truth, Zeboyd's games, and Chained Echoes that are stylistically way more like what's thought of as Japanese RPG's, but are entirely developed on the other side of the Pacific.
