So it turns out that this is... pretty good? Definitely made with a lot of care and reverence for the first movie.

How can they even do that with the LOTR IP firmly locked up by Warner Bros? Or is this a loophole where they say it's technically based on the books and not the movies?
It's the latter. Warner Bros. have the rights to make Middle-earth games derived from the films. The Tolkien Estate retain the rights to license out Middle-earth games not explicitly based on the movies on a game-by-game basis, with EA publishing a mobile game next month. That has to be the shittiest trailer I have seen. I watched it, and I am still none the wiser as to what sort of game this is. A tactical role-playing game, a League of Legends rip-foff, a shitty button-mashing "rpg", a collectible card game--f*** knows, your guess is as good as mine. It's EA and a mobile game, so it's guaranteed to be a microtransaction fest.

Well, it's been out for a while now and appears to be a turn-based strategy game, and based on the reviews there's minimal strategy and collecting the characters is the most engaging part of the game. And yeah, microtransactions galore.

This game turning out to be good is a hell of a plot twist.

Is it being decent a surprise given the people making it did the well received budget Terminator game? It's about as shocking as Nightdive doing a good remaster.

I brought this up at the beginning of the thread. This dev team makes fun games in universes they care about. They don’t have the budget to make world beating AAA level games…but they have the talent and passion to make fun games for people who care about the properties. It’s not shovelware…it’s a good old fashioned mid level game that you’ll enjoy like a more polished, bigger game if you love the property. You can walk around investigating crimes and blowing heads off while Peter Weller voices Robocop. I’ll take that over most of the bigger games I played this year.

IGN being IGN aside, Metacritic's consensus seems to be it's at least "decent." Which is probably better than a lot of people expected tbh.

When do we get a Ninjabread Man sequel? I recently learned that Ninjabread Man started as a Zool sequel and now everything is ruined forever.

James Stephanie Sterling had the Walking Dead: Destinies, Gollum, and Skull Island games on their worst of 2023 list lol.
