I understood it in the 90s but now with how ok everyone is with everyone, the only "war" is what fan boys have fabricated in their heads. Sony dedicating the last couple of years trying to do everything it could to derail the Activision purchase by Microsoft when Nintendo was just like "We still get Call of Duty, right? Cool." is pretty funny, though. Sony still wants console wars while MS and Nintendo mostly play nice with each other. Like Nintendo and MS have mostly embraced cross-platform play while Sony is the big stick in the mud about it. IIRC, Sony being so opposed to it is a big reason why Xbox consoles haven't gotten a port of Final Fantasy XIV yet. Though IIRC, Microsoft shares in the responsibility for that, too. It's definitely not from lack of interest on Square Enix's part.
It actually kind of feels like Xbox might be getting muscled out of getting anything from Square at all. Xbox has only gotten three Square games in the past year, none of which in the last six months, and there's nothing announced on the horizon as coming to it. Plus there used to be a reliable rotation of Square stuff on Gamepass at all times and nearly all of it's gone now.

Apparently Sony blocked both FF7 Remake and FF16 from being ported to Xbox consoles. Not sure how since I haven't heard of anything beyond a timed exclusive deal for both. Not like Sony has a significant ownership stake in Square Enix, either.

The fundamental issue with Microsoft and Square Enix is that the latter makes a decent portion of money with its modest/AA games from Japanese sales, and the Xbox has no presence there. While Nintendo's domination there with the DS/3DS/Switch meant SE couldn't afford to not put games on Nintendo systems (Dragon Quest XI getting a 3DS port was pretty much Square bending the knee to where the JRPG audience was) there's far less incentive to do so with Microsoft consoles when they won't sell back home and even in the West they'll do better numbers via Sony and Nintendo.

I think I was kind of mentally thinking it was already May when I said the six months thing but still, no sign of anything since.

I really feel like sports teams are the best comparison for console fandoms. The whole "I must support my team, no matter what" and "Fans of my rival team are my mortal enemies" attitudes are prominent in both.
