Columbo is like a fine wine when it comes to crime procedurals. Columbo is such a great show. I like how it's different from a lot of other detective and crime drama shows where you know exactly who the murderer is and how they did it. The fun is in seeing how Columbo figures it out in his own way.
And just one more thing. Its resurgence in popularity during the COVID lockdowns and being a big favorite among millennials and Gen Z is a wonderful thing to behold.
If you like the "howcatchem" format of Columbo give Barnaby Jones a try. It's not Columbo quality of course but it's a lot of fun watching Jed Clampett outsmart murderers. Lee Meriwether's in it too. There's a ton of full episodes on YouTube.

The Columbo renaissance might as well be another example. I was floored reading a Twitter thread where the OP asked which show was better: it or The Rockford Files and the latter (which was the 70s era detective show) getting washed.

I'm a little perplexed that METV keeps showing "Green Acres"... and that it has fans... I find the characters just so dumb.
METV used to have "Columbo" in their Sunday night schedule, then dropped it for Perry Mason movies of the 80s. Now it's two hours of "All In The Family". It's a shame, I liked having the mystery movie night stuff in the background.

Bosom Buddies, with Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari, only went two seasons with 37 episodes, yet somehow could usually be found in syndicated reruns on over-the-air television well into the early 2000's. Yeah, sometimes you'd have to go hunting for it at ridiculous hours of the morning, but the fact that it was airing anywhere outside of a novelty cable channel after like 1983 is amazing. On a similar note, It's a Living was a very 80's sitcom best known for its many cast changes and successful revival in first-run syndication years after its initial cancellation by ABC. Despite the fact that, by all rights, it should've been forgotten about the second 1989 ended, reruns of the show somehow became a staple on daytime television (at least where I grew up) throughout the 90's. Wings was a solid workhorse sitcom during NBC's Must See TV Thursday block back in the 90's, but it was never the mega hit the shows airing around it were (Cosby Show, Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends, even Mad About You). Yet when USA Network acquired its rerun rights, it seemed to make up like a solid third of the cable channel's daily schedule well into the 2000's. Antenna TV loved them some It's A Living when I still had cable. Saturday and Sunday afternoon for an hour. (It would be after 2 hours of One Day At A Time. After It's A Living, they aired an hour of Dear John.)

Punky Brewster was a HUGE hit in reruns, lasting into at least 1995, despite the showing having a very 80s feel.

I’m not saying I’m really surprised, because I’m a massive Trekkie and understand how great Star Trek is. But I’d imagine if you told the execs at NBC the moment they canceled the show in 1969 that not only will it be massively successful in syndication during the 70s but it would spawn another 10 tv shows (including 3 cartoon shows and a couple more on the way) and 13 movies, they would think you were on drugs.

Batman ran for mayor and was losing in the polls to the Penguin in that TV series That episode ended with Batman winning because he trusted the voters to be smart and vote for the most suitable candidate and not some loudmouth who kept showboating and lying to the people. Needless to say it's very surreal to watch these days.

I was shocked to see that Andy Griffin not only still airs every day after the evening news on a Jackson channel. But it has aired in that time slot for decades.
Also shocked at how many local channels got reruns of In the Heat of the Night. Yea the show was semi popular when it aired what 30 years ago. But at least 2 OTV channels air it for at least 2 hours every day.
Seemed like from 93 until 6 years ago at least one local OTV station aired an hour of Roseanne every day. For a bit in 2000 thru 2005 3 locals aired it every day at different times. Many a work shift back then was spent watching Roseanne.

"Kitchen Nightmares"
For all the cooking shows that came out during that era from the mid-2000s through the early-2010s, it's weirdly still quite popular.
If you think about it, the show is nothing special. It's a caustic personality at the top of his profession trying to fix a middling brick-and-mortar before it goes out of business. We've seen that exact concept countless times, whether it's "Bar Rescue" or "Hotel Hell" or "Restaurant: Impossible." But "Kitchen Nightmares," which only ran from 2007 through 2014, still gets plenty of syndication, full-length episodes on YouTube have upwards of 5 million views, and its dedicated YouTube channel has nearly a million subscribers - and, again, they haven't produced new content in nearly a decade.

Golden Girls was cited as an example here and while to a degree I do think it is surprising that a sitcom about four middle aged to old women is still popular, if you're queer or a woman you 100% understand the staying power from basically episode one

Seinfeld is a weird case in that it was enormous, then it had a non-trivial amount of people who felt it'd kind of become less funny by virtue of changing times, and then it aged into being highly relevant again and the style of humor has largely made a comeback.
It does make sense, as comedy can be highly cyclical, but it's still sort of amusing to see.

Another one I look at is George Lopez, which was Nickelodeon's most aired show for years until FRIENDS reruns took over that hour total this year, it no longer airs on Nick at Nite, but still airs on TBS, it's impressive how frequently it still airs in syndication It's such an easy watch. I don't even remember when it was first on and where... but I think I've seen the entire series because my wife always has to keep the TV (on Nick at Nite usually) on to sleep so I would watch it before I went to sleep and if I wake up during the night. I think now it's Friends, Mike & Molly, and Mom. LOL

Channel 4 in the UK air Raymond and King of Queens in the mornings all the time When you just want to watch Fraiser and these ruin your sick day more than being sick. I've never known anyone who actually watches them. I have also never met a single person in the UK who admits to watching or liking either Raymond or KoQ. Kevin Can Go f*** Himself was a brilliant send up of that shit sitcom format.

Things like Colombo, Star Trek, Golden Girls, M.A.S.H and even Adam West's Batman still teach us lessons about ourselves and society and they have entertaining stories and charismatic actors. So it shouldn't be a surprise. I am not surprised to see the same episode of Kitchen Knightmares either because people will still watch something they have seen a thousand times out of boredom and laziness. Some reason producers are able to recycle a format and churn out utter crap. How many spin-offs of Come Dine With Me, are there? There is even a version where four strangers take turns going to each others weddings that shit is more fake than wrestling!
