I really wish these hot take shows would just f***ing die a quick death Exactly. Shannon Sharpe is just as toxic to sports today as Skip Bayless, and just as toxic as Stephen A. Smith, Max Kellerman, JJ Redick, Kendrick Perkins, and everyone else who has made a career driving outrage and selling opinion as though it were fact. They've poisoned the discourse in sports to the point where legitimate, honest discussion has been forever eschewed in place of debate and takes. I think of shows that I grew up watching - NFL Matchup, Outside the Lines, or SportsCenter - shows that would have no place in today's sports entertainment world, because they delivered discussions on the X's and O's and conversations about the news in sports. Sadly, this is what the audience wants. They want braying jackals screaming through your television about how this guy is the best player in NBA history, or this guy is the worst quarterback in NFL history. It's just a shame that there's no alternatives.

Damn near every show in the Boston Market is antagonistic, borderline trolling garbage, lead by Felger and Mazz with several copycats out there (the show directly competing with F&M consists of Adam Jones doing a Dollar Tree Felger act). It's awful. If you're an actual fan of sports who wants honest discourse and analysis, you're pretty much f***ed

It's awful. If you're an actual fan of sports who wants honest discourse and analysis, you're pretty much f***ed Blow hards and take culture started in sports talk radio with Jim Rome and any number of local market windbags that make a living feigning outrage and just generally not being insightful at all. Talk radio and sports TV is a cesspool. YouTube seems to be where more nuanced fans get content. It does seem like a lot of the discourse has run off some of the really smart fans, or rather just kinda quieted them. Back in the heyday of forums, there were quite a few people who were just human sports encyclopedias that you just really don't see in almost any online discourse anymore; be it social media posts or YouTube comments or reddit threads or whatever. Someone may occasionally make a point you hadn't thought of or dropped a stat that you didn't know. But before it was like sitting at the tree of knowledge for a few paragraphs. I do think that part of it is how character limits and much shorter attention spans have resulted in short posts/comments/tweets and resulted in a lot of just surface level-type of discussion.

Shady doesn't seem nearly unhinged enough for that show, Skip might eat him alive.

I've always felt like these hot take shows were "sports radio on TV". Boers and Bernstein in Chicago on The Score used to be my favorite show on radio for a time in the mid 2000s. They could incredibly douchey, but it was funny and they always called out the meatball dopes on their terrible takes. Bernstein is still around and a lot of people can stand him and I get it... but I found him entertaining.

It's just a shame that there's no alternatives. ThatsGoodSports recently had a pretty solid 40 minute look back at how we got to this point (probably some language warning in here, and a hint of political discussion but nothing overtly partisan): It's like what's happened to regular news: things like investigative reporting and substantive discourse cost money, and these channels don't want to spend any money if they can help it. It's much easier to just plop a couple of talking heads on camera and go "Jordan or LeBron, go", the same way political shows will say "here's a poll, argue about it, but let's not get into policy..." or whatever. It's cheap content for the content gods. Remember a handful of years ago when they got Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick to do the pre/post game for Sunday Night Football together? Listening to them call highlight's from the day's games leading up to that was such a trip down memory lane...but was actually really entertaining, more than anything else. And yeah, sports talk radio is brain cell destroying. Here in the NYC market it used to be Mike and the Mad Dog reining supreme, and while I was never much of a fan of either they still weren't like this. Hell, late night sports talk radio in NYC, going back to guys like Steve Sommers and Tony Paige, could be downright chummy, like a group of people unwinding at a bar reflecting on the night's games. It's why I got XM and never looked back quite awhile ago: I know when I have MLB radio on I'll probably have to hear people toeing the company line about rule changes or whatever, but at least it's not hot take city and at least there's actual analytical content...though, to be fair, bringing in Steve Philips, Jim Duquette, and Jim Bowden as former GMs to rate trades is kind of darkly hilarious.

I used to love the local (Chicagoland) sports talk radio show, Boers and Bernstein. They basically made fun of stupid callers and were just funny. Bernstein is still around but I don't really listen anymore. He would (and from what I've heard still does) get way too political but he and Boers were the perfect combo of young and brash along with old and crotchety. LOL
