I don't care what anyone says, AVGN wishing his Genie go swim in a septic tank to spite him was hilarious.

The top comment on that video sums up my entire argument. “ you can’t truly criticize the movie, unless you have an extended lore behind your characters persona.”

been playing Saints Row 4 recently? How’d you notice? I see the name "Zinyak" and instinctively swear.

I don’t mind if they are done well.
But sick of seeing these tropes: “somebody in a position of power forces them to review something for some reason’ or “the reviewer gets angry at their audience for demanding they review bad stuff.”

Board James was genuinely funny and well done. I don't mind some of the AVGN episodes with storylines either. Ninja Gaiden was one of my favorites.
I'm trying to think of of another reviewer who actually pulled off a story or storyline well, but I'm struggling.

AVGN still does that, but at least most of his skits are limited to a single video (I heard Board James had a continuing storyline, but I didnt watch that series). Oh man Board James is great. It's almost the exception that proves the rule. It starts off as a review of 90s board games and slowly turns into a genuinely fun existential horror story. While also still being about board games. It’s not part of the bigger “storyline”, but the Board James with Mr. Bucket was hilarious horror done right.

My girlfriend and I still binge Board James once or twice a year. The Dream Phone episode might be the best video James has ever done, except for maybe the MIMAL the Elf mockumentary.

I think some of it was them trying to have a hook that'd get people to watch videos for reviews on things they otherwise would not care about, along with giving people an incentive to watch every video in general, but honestly, a lot of it was probably to creatively exert themselves and fight off getting bored of making their own content. It occasionally worked out, but yeah, most of it didn't really hold muster and it petered out for a reason. It's honestly maybe the best thing James ever made.

I don’t mind if they are done well. But sick of seeing these tropes: “somebody in a position of power forces them to review something for some reason’ or “the reviewer gets angry at their audience for demanding they review bad stuff.” The former really highlights how so many of them grew up watching MST3K and probably like the framing device but can't really think to do anything new with it. I feel like one of the only people that gets away with doing both of these is Civvie 11, and that's in large part because his content mostly flirts with the idea of an arching narrative, but mostly just takes the piss out of it as a concept, and for the latter, he acknowledges that the worst stuff is what he brings on himself to mine for content. He only really lashes out that much at fans if they are really pushy or impatient for him to get to a particular game, and even that's not taken seriously.

I actually really enjoyed Linkara's and Spoony's stuff back in the day. I love cheesy stuff and it was fun watching them just absolute geeks. Spoony getting attacked by Snow from FF 13 was a blast to me.
Stuff like the stupid skits in the rebooted Nostalgia Critic were dire though. Could tell dude was still mad Demo Reel bombed hard.

I still mark for Linkara's 90s kid character.

Spoony and Linkara reviewing The Ultimate Warrior's comic books still makes me laugh. You can tell they're having a lot of fun doing it.

Thought Kyle Kallgren had some really good ones, like the portrayal of depression in his Melancholia review, and the whole Disney/Cocteau narrative in the Beauty And The Beast one.

Even with the people who I enjoy like AntDude and Saberspark do this all the time and it’s like “Bro, you can, like…not do it?” and it’s always the stuff that gets them the most viewers.

Somebody if they have not already should do a bit like this.. YTer: My god you people make me watch some bullshit and I'm f***ing sick of it.. I quit.. No more Sour Yogurt Reviews.. *cuts to YTer returning to their place of employment before they became successful in Youtube, looking miserable* YTer: OK I was wrong, I need this.. Give me your f***ing worst.

I like how "Wrestling With Wregret" and Phelous' skit are more Family Guy-esque. Just random gags peppered in.

Honestly I think what's made me realise I don't like that type of stuff anymore is seeing more of it after seeing the newer type with the ContraPoints/PhilosophyTube style of "yeah she's making up a weird character for this video essay but she's still just presenting the entire topic to you with brief breaks for a joke"
