The good old fashioned “I was hacked” defense. LMAO. I’m not sure that Tay was involved in whatever this was, but it sounds like an attempt to go viral and reignite her career or something(read cash in again) and when people were like WTF they busted the old tried and true hack attack defense. There’s no reason why it should have taken 24 hours or so for her to say that she’s alive. Possibly the best part of this though is that it has proven TMZ as a more credible source than reputable news sites. 😂 The New York Post was never reputable.

The LA Times cited them way back when Michael Jackson died in their front page news story. Then they gave his wrong age of death. To paraphrase a Norm Macdonald quote, it’s not that TMZ has gotten great. It’s that legacy media has gotten really, really bad.

When a verified account posts that the person has died, that's usually the truth so I don't blame any news outlets for running with the news.
This whole situation is messy though. If it was intended as a publicity stunt then it's backfired because instead of people reminiscing about Lil Tay, it just dragged up how awful some/all of her family are and how she's been taken advantage of.
I'd never heard of her before this (I'm completely out of the loop on influencers, YouTubers, and people like that) but I hope the situation makes people think twice about putting kids on social media like this.

Again, I don't understand why, within an hour of the "controversy" beginning, the police aren't at her parents or guardians house saying "what's going on with your daughter?". They can only tell the police one of two things - 1. "she's dead", in which the police should ask to explain what happened and present proof like a death certificate or the name of a doctor to confirm, or 2. "she's alive", in which case the police should ask to see the child. I realize the former can be a delicate situation for a grieving family, but we are talking about the welfare of a minor here and that takes priority.
The police should then be able to send out some kind of press release saying they can either, unfortunately, confirm the child's death, or announce this was a hoax and are leaving the situation in the hands of Family Services from here on out. This should only take a few hours, why are we on day two of this mess?

I'm so glad she's alive but I'm also disappointed that this is probably another hoax by her abusing parents. Crazy.

Yeah, no. Just because TMZ doesn't outright lie (most of the time, anyway) doesn't make them reputable on the vast majority of things. Most of their content is so superificial it's transluscent and of course, they are blatantly pushing their own narrative on everything and of course, they're awful shit-stirrers who constantly try to fabricate drama and controversy if they can't find any to report on and have zero respect for people's privacy or even their humanity, or that of their families. They are the poster kids for yellow journalism. They're everything wrong with modern media but for some reason it's the one outlet people are defending. And really, they didn't even break the scoop on that one. They reported that Tay was dead when the announcment was dead, just like everyone else. Then retracted and corrected it when credible sources made new announcements, just like everyone else. So I'm not sure why we're putting TMZ on a pedestal like that. Again, I don't understand why, within an hour of the "controversy" beginning, the police aren't at her parents or guardians house saying "what's going on with your daughter?". Lying isn't a crime in and of itself so unless there was evidence that the family actually was trying to fake the kids' deaths and if nobody was reporting their death, disappearance or asked for a wellness check or something like that, there's no justification for the police to investigate anything.

The most disturbing thing to me, in just now learning who she is, is the fact that she had so many followers-is it the train wreck mentality? In this case wouldn't it be better if she didn't get a reaction? I mean really, she might have been 9, but adults and people who should have known better were supporting her really.

It's the welfare of an underage child who may or may not be dead. That's plenty of justification for the police to get involved.

Is her brother confirmed dead or is that situation just as mysterious? Probably no mystery, the family probably faked the whole thing for attention so they stayed mum on the whole subject

Okay but like... Why all the other weird behavior then? Was this some weird thing where someone hacked the account and the family went, "Hey, let's roll with that!" or something?

Her parents are shitty and it is weird that her rep could not confirm with a phone call that she was okay Even with the hacking, something isn't right

Any updates on this? Why wouldn’t the family confirm that she wasn’t dead right away?
Was this a publicity stunt gone wrong?
Or is everyone just pushing this aside to keep on the 24 news cycle?

Any updates on this? Why wouldn’t the family confirm that she wasn’t dead right away? Was this a publicity stunt gone wrong? Or is everyone just pushing this aside to keep on the 24 news cycle? Because her family has taken advantage of her since she was a kid She hasn't even posted on the IG account in 5 years. People got to really realize her f***ed her situation is. Her mother and father were fighting over her career including people accusing her father of assaulting her (this was news back in 2020) The story has sort of petered off with the hacking being confirmed. Even though the "help me" stuff from her Youtube bio is something that hasn't been explained
