What was my grandpa thinking?
Me, my dad and his dad went fishing. My grandpa was terrified of snakes. He couldn't stand them. While taking the aluminum boat down a creek, we went under some hanging trees and a snake dropped into the boat next to grandpa. He pulled out his .22 pistol and shot it, perforating the bottom of his boat. The fishing trip was over and I had to hold my thumb over the hole as we headed back to the launch.

Admittedly, I can write off the firing at the snake as fear taking over, though really, firing a gun in a small boat with 3 people on it is definitely crazy. I'm wondering why the hell he had the pistol on a fishing trip.

Going out into the wild meant bringing at least one. We usually shot a few rounds off just for fun. This was by no means an uncontrolled shot. It didn't happen instantaneously. He aimed and sighted it in while my dad tried to tell him...

My Dad hired Creepshow on VHS circa 1983 as it looked like a comic. Seven year old me and a friend watched it under his supervision - much to my Mum’s disapproval - and loved it.
He also hired a film about truckers which he put on straight after. A topless woman appeared within the first ten minutes, which was the moment when my Mum finally drew the line.

How does one "hire" a VHS? I presumed English is a second language and it’s a confusing translation.

How does one "hire" a VHS? THink it is a UK term for renting. I Know I have hearrd it before somewhere.

How does one "hire" a VHS? When you can't afford a VHS, you hire one to perform the actions you desire for like 75 minutes. Just like a girlfriend.

Even so, it should be fairly obvious what was meant. Rent and hire have similar meanings.

Podcast years ago my main co host was from Wales. Told a story about a van that would drive around her town loaded up with tapes to hire. Wish I still had it but another co host had drawn her climbing into the back of a "Free VHS" Van to be the episode art.

Grandfathers are all a trip, I don't know if it's a generational thing or what, and they come from an era when people didn't really think about safety, but everyone seems to have a story about theirs doing something incredibly dangerous and/or irresponsible. Mine once set his stepfather's car on fire, just because he didn't like him.
