It was fine. It was more for WWE to keep using him to sell merchandise and appeal to advertisers. Right, I was 13 and was just happy to have stone cold on my tv

This was to just try and keep Steve around. Austin's career ended very fast. 5 years prior he was in his first year as WWF Champion and having success against everyone he faced. Steve had worked a decade for that.
By 2003, it ended and I think there was a desire for Steve to keep going. This was a different era where you didn't just leave the business and go work in a factory. Steve had become such a huge star that him having to retire at 38 was deveastating for him and the comnpany. To put in perspective, it would be if Hulk Hogan fought his last match at Wrestlemania IV against Andre and by the end of 1988 was an authority figure fighting for Randy Savage and other babyface. You lose out on Hogan's run post 1988. Steve could have had a 2nd career in his 40s going in another direction, but instead was retired and reduced to segments and officiating matches, which wasn't what Steve wanted to do and far from where he imagined himself in years prior.

2003 was a strange period looking back, a congested roster so many names and not a lot for them to do, kinda like they were trying to salvage the errors from 2001 ie The Invasion, Austin's heel turn, The Rock's departure(which he would fully do in 2003), HHH and Benoit benched etc while struggling to make a new star, but still holding on to big names.

There was a match at the 2003 Survivor Series to decide which GM would run Raw, and Austin's team lost. One month later he is a "Sheriff", rendering that match meaningless. Basically being the babyface version of the 2014 Survivor Series where the Authority's team lost, which meant that the Authority was no longer running things... only for the Authority to be reinstated a month later, rendering that match meaningless.

Sue me, I thought it was funny. *shrugs* I wasn't a huge Austin guy anyway. I liked Bret, Angle, Jericho, Triple H (for a time), Foley, Edge and Christian, Benoit, so what Austin did wasn't a huge deal to me. I guess if you were an Austin superfan, it was a big deal, but he just did what he did and I watched the shows for the guys I liked.

In my chronological rewatching of all the shows on the WWE Network (now Peacock), I just finished watching Unforgiven 2003, so I’m getting very close to the “Sheriff Austin” stuff.

It would've been easier to stomach were it not for the plastic sheriff badge. Not by much, granted, but still easier.

What was he able to do as sheriff? I don’t think he had the power to matches or add stipulations to Eric Bischoff’s matches. It just seemed like a meaningless title.

It would've been easier to stomach were it not for the plastic sheriff badge. Austin of 2001 would not have let that slide. They should have had a segment where Angle proclaims he needed a stinkin' badge after all.

I think he had some limited authority, like if Bischoff booked a babyface against 5 heels or something I think he could kibosh that but I honestly don't remember. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched anything from 2003

I wasn’t an Austin fan during the Attitude era, but this period was like they stripped away all of the things that I *did* like about him and amplified everything I didn’t.

I couldn't tell you the last time I watched anything from 2003 He still had enough authority to book the triple threat match at Wrestlemania XX. This was when he was the sheriff, not the co-GM. Also, he had left sometime after Wrestlemania because he appeared on the draft lottery episode of Raw, which was a week after Mania.

Wasnt this from the period where he gave babyface Stacy Kiebler a stunner for the crime of not wanting to drink beer?
