I don't really see anything wrong with him not wanting to work with Ortiz anymore and preferring to go singles, whatever, but it does feel like he has a really unwarranted image of himself as an already-made top guy that basically no one else agrees with. He might have the capacity for it, maybe, but he's going to need to work to show that if he really wants it to work.

After Vince took a lot of wrestler's names away I liked Santana gaining a new name. He should go on a campaign to give all one named wrestlers a regular extra name. Charles Wardlow ,Abby Abadon, Bill Hook etc Peter Danhausen it's not Dan Hausen?

I kind of worry Santana is Chris Harris'ing himself. *nods* I've thought this for awhile now.

All we really have to go by is an Ortiz interview from a month or so ago, and it's one side of the story, but how he says it, it makes it sound like getting Santana to even do the Ortiz feud was a bit difficult and it was more or less AEW wanting tie up the loose end of PNP not teaming. Like I know before his injury, Santana had a good main event match at TERMINUS that ended with a weird ref botch then won a title in Puerto Rico, but yeah it does kind of sound like he expected his work with the Inner Circle to be proof he's ready for a singles push and... he just isn't gonna get that in AEW. Best of luck to him, bet on yourself is good, but really the little that does come out it feels like there's a huge difference in expectations vs reality

It was a team that worked, they probably had a better chance at that title run once free of the IC's orbit (almost demonstrably based on some reports). And if Ortiz's side isn't like, 100% lies (and there's a lot of smoke to the fire when you look at what Santana's visibly pursued and done), it suggests that Santana is hard enough to work with that he would miss out on the spot just from not playing ball enough.

This whole thing has been depressing as f***. I dunno how much is true for either of them but this f***ing sucks
I still advocate for GCW booking Santana Jackson vs. Mike Jackson vs. Mike Santana

I hope it works out for him, but I don't see Santana getting a big singles push anytime soon.
I think the money was in the tag team with Ortiz but obviously he feels differently.

It was kind of a non-starter from the off if that is what he's advocating for, honestly. He's kind of in the worst possible position he could be to move up in AEW specifically. First of all, if he wants to be a legitimate main eventer, that doesn't really work because there are literally probably a dozen or more talent who are established main eventers that he needs to leapfrog. Even including injured guys you have Cole, Mox, Joe, MJF, Danielson, Kenny, Hangman, Jay White, Jericho, Kota Ibushi just to name a few. But even if you ignore that, it gets worse! You've had some midcarders occasionally get to have main event matches against main event talents and even get wins, but all of them were people who were established as singles competitors in their own right anyway and not just tag team guys, like Jungle Boy or Garcia. Even speaking as someone who is advocating for more men of colour in the AEW main event scene, there's both of the Lucha Bros, Keith Lee, Swerve, even Scorpio f***ing Sky has a more established singles and main event aura than Santana does. P&P were great, and they had distinct personalities as guys, but they were also definitively two halves of a tag team and have only briefly been featured as anything else on AEW TV.

Santana's biggest issue always felt like to me that he felt like he was a made man already and a star who didn't need to work to be a star he should just be a top guy, and he's never been a singles competitor in any serious facet of his career to even know if he'd sink or swim
But he doesn't seem willing to want to work up the card and that also means to lose matches. It might feel shitty to do but this is how you showcase yourself. A lot of the talent in AEW who are now getting pushes lost a lot, but those losses helped send a statement about how they weren't going anywhere. Daniel Garcia is now more over then he has ever been after losing four straight matches in the Continental Classic
Santana could very easily build himself up as someone in AEW worth a shit, but he is not a top star right now and nothing he has done has indicated he is right now. He could get there, but the dude's head is still stuck in like TERMINUS where he main evented their second and last show, like he wants to cut the line, and in a big promotion with this much talent, dude you ain't gonna do it, and you won't in WWE either.

Ortiz didn't flat out say this, but in the podcast interview he did a month or so ago (posted the article in the PNP thread awhile back) he heavily implied that the only reason they even got Santana to do the mini feud with Ortiz was that them being at Wembley was reliant on him playing ball. It sucks that their friendship got ruined to the extent it did. I don't fault Santana for wanting more, just like I don't fault Ortiz for saying "I get a steady paycheck, I can take care of my family, and I can transition to a backstage role", but yeah it feels like everything for whatever reason went south after the TERMINUS match

I know I tend to go to the "X should go to NJPW" well pretty often, but honestly... if he's this dead set on Mike Santana, Singles Star (TM), he's very obviously not getting it in AEW as has been quite well elucidated in this thread.
Seriously, he's got the vibes of being like "18th in line of succession but still feels like they have the chance" energy but without even seemingly showing that he's got a way to Littlefinger his way there.

I have wondered if NJPW or Impact might be a path forward for him, yeah. If he wants to bet on himself so hard, a change in scenery is probably the most realistic chance for him.

Santana in New Japan is the best path forward for him IMO. Would definitely allow him to figure stuff out as a singles guy and see if he really is the main event caliber talent he already believes himself to be.

If the Ortiz interview is true ort even like half true, I have to imagine Santana's AEW singles push isn't going to materialize just from a cooperation standpoint and everyone knows it, so now it's just the waiting game on him getting out of his contract so he can do something somewhere else. And if that's the case, AEW's not going to keep using him and having him suck up TV time just before he leaves.

I mean, the guy isn't even main eventing shows in Ridgefield Park, NJ for GCW and soon, ETU Wrestling, what makes him think he's going to main event AEW shows?

I feel like the Ortiz match was Tony saying OK you keep telling me you can be a top singles guy go out there and show it, and he just kinda put on an OK TV match that got no buzz afterwards.

The second he gets off the plane, Togo will be there at the airport with a House of Torture shirt ready for him.
