They usually play it VERY safe with the NXT title which can lead to some really dull reigns because 90% of the time you know when a title is changing hands (that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but like 8 years of that makes it hard to care about. Especially when it's a champ you don't care about and you know they have 8+ months before they're maybe gonna lose. I also feel like the tendency to have the traditional friends to enemies blood feud around WM season get away from the belt (maybe to have two marquee matches at the WM adjacent show) leads to the belt feeling less important than the blood feuds, which kinda devalues the belt. The fact that the WM weekend show is going to be main evented by Williams v Hayes and not Dragunov v D'Angelo doesn't help here. And also, to follow up the second bit, it's often so they can add the title later as a reason to extend the feud... Which historically has led to mixed results. I think Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa are still trying to get a lot their goodwill back for how long that feud dragged out and how self-indulgent it became.

Bobby Roode held the NXT Championship for 203 days and I couldn’t tell you one match he had while champion. I remember the Roddy match specifically because he talked about his "moderately hot wife".

I haven’t regularly watched NXT in a long time, but when I did, I was almost never interested in the championship. I think part of it goes to the fact that you know that fellow will be ascending soon, so I’m more concerned about the favorites of mine before the NXT main events. For whatever that means lol

Since NXT 2.0 the belts haven’t felt terribly important. Once they declared “this is not a 3rd brand, this is developmental” the belts lost all of their shine. I mean, the belts serve their purpose but it used to be a much bigger deal to be a NXT champ Original NXT made the Title feel important because it felt like anyone was in contention for it, like anyone could get a big win and would have a claim to go for it... That changed later in NXT's life... but it's especially been obvious in NXT 2.0 There was also a good chance that if you failed to win a tile you'd be called up and never get another chance. That's been undermined by people coming back years later to win it.

Before I clicked on this thread I had no idea who the current NXT champion was. And at one point I loved NXT so much that I spent several hundred dollars on a replica NXT belt.

The thing I didn't like about it is that in the takeover days, it seemed like being the champ prevented you from being called up to the main roster. Champs didn't receive consequences for losing their titles. It was "you lost your title, congrats you're now going up to the main roster."

I would say being called up to the main roster WAS the consequence of losing the title back then.

I would say being called up to the main roster WAS the consequence of losing the title back then. lol and that's weird. "You lost, here's a promotion!" Depends on some things. A lot of promotions from NXT to the main roster back then didn't get a pay bump unless they signed a new deal. And especially under Vince McMahon, someone might have preferred being a big fish in NXT's small pond as opposed to getting lost in the shuffle on Raw or Smackdown.
It's easier for the women as it isn't as big a roster as the men, so you've seen a lot of former NXT Women's Champions get world titles on Raw or Smackdown like Iyo, Rhea, and Asuka. But for the men? Outside of old pros holding the title to give a rub to a developmental talent like Samoa Joe, Finn Balor, or Dolph Ziggler, the last NXT Champion to really do anything of significance on the main roster was Andrade, who got a US Championship run. And his NXT Championship run was back in 2017.
That said, Bron and Dragunov look like locks to be stars on main roster WWE. But then I thought the same things about Ciampa and Gargano.

Might not be the most interesting part of the show, but I always looked at NXT as the modern day IC title. I feels like stepping stone for guys before they get strong pushes on the main show.
