Some of these guys felt creatively stifled, some felt held back. The grass is always greener and many wrestlers are at least partly a mark for themselves. Not only that, they did see some others jump ship and move up significantly like Drew, like Cody, like Swerve. They took a chance on themselves.
However, they walked into a company that from what I'd heard had a bloated roster. I sadly haven't had a chance to see AEW but guys like the Hardys had been washed up in the ring for a long time. Rusev had a legitimate reason to want out. He had gotten massively over twice, on the cusp of the main event, only to be cut down. I think a lot of us thought him going to AEW would move him up the ladder.
I can't imagine things being any worse for Allister black than him sitting in a dark room and hoping someone knocks.
Back in the WWF/WCW days only a small handful didn't switch companies st some point.
Also, these guys left a company that Vince was in charge of. People generally seem much happier under triple h, we've seen the midcard get some love and I think these guys realize this isn't the company they left. As long as they aren't problematic, I see no reason not to bring them back.

Cesaro left without complaining after Vince announced publicly that he was never moving up. Who wouldn’t leave after that?

Especially after he had gotten over massively time and time again... and the literal last time he got a main event booking Roman no sold everything he did... followed by a beatdown from Roman, Jey and Rollins... just to make extra sure the audience knew not to give a shit about him as a main-eventer any more...

I'd only bring the Hardys back on legends deals for the HOF. I just don't think they need to be in a wrestling ring performing anymore.

I’d only not bring people back if there was no use for them because of their talent/age/fit, but I certainly wouldn’t worry about “trust” being one of the issues. It’s just a part of wrestling that talent will complain about their position on the card and see the grass as greener. It’s human nature.

Jeff's career is getting dangerously close to feeling like a real life "Droz shoved Hawk off of the Titantron" moment, with Matt in the role of Droz.

Anyone who's had a consistent presence in WWE before going to AEW has basically taken the same spot on the card. If it was going to happen for them as main eventers in either company, it would've happend by now. Swerve being the only exception Yeah, but I think he's a different case. Miro and Cesaro have been on TV for over a decade. Cole was a main eventer in NXT for years. Black did a bit of both. Swerve has always felt very fresh in comparison.

I'd only want Dustin back for a special appearance match (like he did at a WWE Starrcade a few years back) in a match for the fans against Cody. Title on the line optional.
