Get you a 360 or hold off and let the PS3 get something going first. Sony really hasn't gotten much going on yet. (they're always slow to start) I wouldn't rush either way. Both systems are still infants with a lack of titles. X-Box 360 backwards compatability blows though. Know that.

So far, the lone dissenter by picking the PS3. Why? I don't care for FPS or shooters in general (SOCOM burned me out) and I don't play online unless I absolutely have to. So... PS3 for the win for me. I'm coppin' one soon. Like in a couple months soon...

I'd wait till the fall to decide. Right now, the choice would be 360, but the PS3's fall line up looks so good that only the Wii's beats it.
The PS3's fall line up looks somewhat like this:
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction WarHawk Lair Heavenly Sword Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Uncharted: Drakes Fortune(graphically, this is the best looking game of the entire year) Assassin's Creed Grand Theft Auto IV Unreal Tournament 3
Other PS3 titles due out this year, but release unknown:
John Woo Present's Stanglehold(and PS3 version comes with Hard Boiled, the movie of which this game is a continuation of)
360's fall lineup is:
Halo 3 Assassin's Creed BioShock Lost Odyssey Mass Effect Grand Theft Auto IV Unreal Tournament 3
Also, the PS3 has other projects due this year, such as the Home program(think Nintendo's Mii function, combined with Animal Crossing, and the 360's achievement system, and hyped up on crack), and the amazing looking game, LittleBigPlanet, where you basically form the levels as you go based ONLY on physics.
In other words, saying to just get a 360 right now would be unfair for the PS3. You have to wait, and then decide.

If I were you, I'd go with the 360, more games, better games, mature and thriving online community, and firm 3rd party support. The PS3 is very capable, but I think it's a little ahead of its time and it will be a while before both Sony and developers can really utilize the power and make it worth the price of admission (which will be less than $600 by then).
Personally, I wouldn't get either until I had a nice HDTV to hook it up to. Playing these next-gen consoles on standard def isn't worth it to me.

Yes....about 1,000 of the 1,200 or so PS2 titles play on the PS3.

Meh. Sega Genesis FTW, thanks very much, Marvin. Does Sega Genesis have Virtua Cop 2? F*** NO! I was real good at that game. Remember my friends sister played on hard and lost like all of the health or whatever like not even close to halfway through, and I still beat it. Loved shooting all the computers and files too, bet the people that worked at that office came back and were like "...what the hell?"...

PS2 games will play on PS3 right? Yes. But the "Emotion" chip that ran the PS2 and allows for backward compatibility will be taken out of the US version eventually (it already has been in the European version). That means all backward compatibility will be software based, and not all games will work right away (it will work via updates like on the 360).

Also, keep in mind, there is only ONE option for PS3s right now. They stopped making the $500 PS3, and only have the $600 PS3 out now.
There is a rumor for a PS3 with a 80GB hard drive(20GB bigger than the $600's hard drive), and you'll need a big hard drive if you want to download demos, as they guzzle gigs fast....I learned that the hard way(I have the $500 model.....only 20GB....T^T).

Tough choice, unless you are me. I have way too much invested in Sony to start over with another system. If you are fresh and have no Sony debt, then go with the X-Box 360 Elite. My only complaint would be that they put out a bigger model six months later.

There's no "real" answer anyone can offer you, only suggestions.
I personally don't like First Person Shooters, WW2 games, racing sims, or sports games that much, so that leaves about 3 games on the 360 that I'd actually want to play. I also think HD-DVD is going the way of the dodo soon, so the desire to hop on the system to adopt a soon-to-be dead media format does nothing for me. I also rarely do online gaming and would never in my life pay to do so. Considering that, the 360 isn't even an option for me personally.
On the PS3 front, I did own the PS2 and backwards compatibility is nice, but there's not a ton of games out for it that I'm dying to play, at least not right now. Once Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War 3, and the next Ratchet and Clank come out (along with a nice price drop), I'm sure it'll look a lot more attractive. However, as of right now, there's no point in my purchasing the system because my PS2 works fine and there's no games out now or in the immediate future I'm dying to play. I do have a HD-TV that can pump out 1080p, but I don't want to reinvest in Blu-Ray discs and have a DVD player that upconverts and looks fine, so even buying it for that isn't logical right now.
Basically, it's difficult to get an informed decision from random people because everyone has a unique perspective on why they play videogames. I personally don't like to partake in anything the 360 has at its core focus, so there's no point in spending money on it. I do like the PS3's potential library, but it's not available as of now. You should really sit down and look at what's available and what's coming out in the future and decide based on that. I'm personally waiting a few months for a PS3.

Cool perspective man, especially about the 360. I'm curious to why you think HD DVD is going down the can though? First I'd heard.

Cool perspective man, especially about the 360. I'm curious to why you think HD DVD is going down the can though? First I'd heard. Blu-Ray is flat out more capable (it holds 25 gigs vs. HD-DVD's 15 gigs), has far more support amongst studios (don't quote me, but Universal is the only HD-DVD exclusive studio and is letting the contract expire and has Blu-Ray discs announced. Also, major players like Disney/Pixar are Blu-Ray exclusive), allows for 1080p (HD-DVD doesn't), and is currently leading sales in some ridiculous number like 3:1. A lot of jump in the sales of Blu-Ray is directly related to the PS3, but HD-DVD is slowly showing signs of death. Prices are being rumored to be cut dramatically, which is good for the consumer, but the device is already being sold at a lost for the producer. As mentioned above, most support is for both or Blu-Ray exclusively, so there's no advantage in owning HD-DVD. As much as people want to say Porn will decide this contest, it's a different game than it was in the 80s. Basically, if Microsoft wasn't backing HD-DVD and covering the losses it's posting (which is what its rumored as doing for Hitatchi), there'd likely be no discussion.
