From correspondents in London
June 20, 2007 02:15pm
A COMPUTER game that appears to feature a CCTV image of the 1993 abduction of murdered toddler James Bulger is being withdrawn from sale in Britain.
The move follows calls from his mother, Denise Fergus, for stores to halt sales of Law and Order: Double or Nothing.
An image appears to depict James being led away in Merseyside by his killers Robert Thompson and John Venables. At the time, his murder by two 10-year-olds sent shockwaves around the world.
Legacy Interactive, the developer of the game, apologised and said the photo would be removed from future copies.
Chris Johnson, a spokesman for Ms Fergus, said she was anxious that her son's death should not be used as a "form of entertainment".
"It dehumanises James and it seems his death enters into some kind of myth or legend.
"To her it is very real and an ever-present emotion."I remember this happening, I think they're right to pull the game. Using images from that time to enhance a game is wrong.

I remember that. My guess is that the game is terrible and the designers wanted to sabotage it.

yeah, that needs to be banned. as much as censorship is wrong, there is no need for putting something like that in a game. whoever put that in should be whipped, snipped and gripped. that's disgusting.

I can't believe they even considered putting that in there. People are still raw about that here to this day.

I, too, agree with the decision to pull the game. The James Bulger story received a lot of attention in the US. A horrible crime. I heard the two killers were later freed! Is that true?

I wonder how much money was spent rehabbing those two killers so they could re-enter society? It is so creepy to think that they can go out and procreate, and interact near children.

The fact the word "appears" appears so often in the text, leads me to believe they've perhaps jumped the gun.

That's it, just that tiny image? Why put it in the game in the first place? Idiots, i hope the people who made this game get their comeuppance for this crap.

I know it's tiny but that image is pretty iconic here I have a feeling it is not iconic, however, in California where Legacy Interactive is based. And just to make it clear, I think having that picture in game without consent is tasteless, but I also think it's a rather unfortunate oversight that will be corrected.

Overreaction IMO.
The image is relatively small and it's used in the context of trying to solve a crime, which is precisely what the image actually was used for in real life.

I'm guessing it was just an oversight and not intentional. Sometimes these things happen, especially if the game was done under a tight budget. You can't always check every detail.
