The Beatles: (I'm not including Magical Mystery Tour or Yellow Submarine) 11. With the Beatles I'm just not keen on the Beatles covering other peoples songs. There are always exceptions to this rule (Twist and Shout), but this album always smacks of "lets rush this album out as quick as possible to make a fortune". And it certainly did. 10. Help! I'm not keen on the film, so maybe I immediately disregard the album too quickly. 9. Please Please Me If there is any period of the Beatles history that I like the least, it's the very beginning. But then again, this album contains Lennon's voice on the verge of breakdown croaking his way through "Twist and Shout", so it's ok. 8. A Hard Days Night Some great songs hidden away on this album ("Things we Said Today" "And I Love Her") and some real flashes of improvement in Songwriting. 7. Let it Be Certainly not quite the trainwreck I hear some people accuse it of being. Yes, the Spector "Wall of Sound" is not quite the classic Beatles we'd got used to but it's not that bad. 6. Beatles for Sale The best Bob Dylan album he never recorded. The first 5 songs are all great (even the Chuck Berry cover). It tails off a bit towards the end, but a real sign of the change that was happening. 5. The Beatles (The White Album) Somewhere on this album is a great album trying to get out. There is some brilliance (While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Dear Prudence), some great sinaglong songs (Birthday, Back in the USSR, ObLaDi ObLaDa) and some real pretentious crap (Revolution 9). 4. Revolver In the UK this always seems to be the #1 choice of best Beatles Album. I wouldn't go that far, but it's still a fantastic album from my favourite Beatles period. George Harrison manages to finally get some album space with 3 tracks (including the brilliant "Taxman"). And as for the rest, I'll just say 3 words... Tomorrow never knows. 3. Abbey Road Starts with a bang in "Come Together" and finishes with the bizarre medley that works so well. "Golden Slumbers" into "Carry That Weight" is pop perfection. Also contains two of George Harrison's classics ("Something "was our first dance at my wedding). 2. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band The best selling album ever in the UK. A strange mixture of styles which works so well when heard in one sitting. Lennon and McCartney combine perfectly on "A Day in the Life", McCartney writes his best lyircs (up until then anyway) in "She's Leaving Home". It has Harrison's Indian Influence, Ringo singing a song, a classic singalong in "When I'm 64" and a bit of weird and wonderful in the shape of Mr.Kite. 1. Rubber Soul My favourite time period in the Beatles history. The boyband days were behind them, they had started writing more lyrically driven songs and weren't afraid of experimenting. Every song on this album is (at the very least) good. There is the genius of "NoWhere Man", the first (to my recollection) use of a sitar on a Beatles track in "Norweigan Wood", the Beatles singing "tit" in the background of "Girl" and the most perfect Beatles song ever appears on this album, "In My Life". That's a good rundown. I liked it.

I got lots of time on my hands for right now.....so here's Boston:
5. Corporate America Ugh. Avoid at all costs, even if you are a fan of the group. People should be given back money for buying this turd. No recommendations.
4. Walk On Another long wait between albums (8 years) and the first album to not feature lead singer Brad Delp. Instead we have the impressive vocal gymnastics of Fran Cosmo. A decent disc, but overall below the level of previous Boston efforts. Recommendations include Magdelene, and the whole Walk On medley (Walkin' At Night, Walk On, Get Organ-ized, and Walk On (some more.)
3. Don't Look Back The follow-up to their debut album, Scholz was unhappy with the album because he felt like he was rushed to release it. Recommendations include It's Easy, the title track, and Feelin' Satisfied
2. Third Stage 8 years, a new record label, and several lawsuits later, Boston re-emerged from the rubble with a spectacular album. It still retains the essential elements to the "Boston sound" (that being Tom Scholz and Brad Delp.) Recommendations include Amanda, We're Ready/The Launch/Cool The Engines/My Destination, and Hollyann,
1. Boston The highest selling debut album to date, and definately the greatest "demo" recordings ever. Tom Scholz spent his off-time from working at Poloroid to record a demo tape with Brad Delp contributing vocals. CBS loved the demos but wanted them re-recorded in a "professional" studio. Scholz had a makeshift band put together in LA recording tracks while he worked on the tracks in his basement studio. Recommendations include Hitch A Ride, More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind, Smokin', and Foreplay/Long Time.

Nice Radiohead list, Jed.
Here's my Beatles rundown (not including Yellow Submarine on the list since it's at best half an album):
12. With the Beatles - There's a few very good songs on this album but this is one of the only Beatles albums where I feel the urge to skip ahead. Highlights: All My Loving, I Wanna Be Your Man
11. Beatles for Sale - Starts off strong, quickly tapers off. Vastly underrated as an album. Highlights: I'm a Loser, Baby's in Black, Eight Days a Week
10. Let It Be - I am not a big fan of Let It Be. I think Phil Spector overproduced it and flat out ruined some beautiful songs (see: The Long and Winding Road). Highlights: Across the Universe, Let It Be, Get Back
9. A Hard Day's Night - Big fan of the movie and the soundtrack but there's better stuff out there. Highlights: A Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love
8. Help! - Help! is that moment right before the Beatles went from really good to flat out amazing. It's a transitional album, to be sure, but there's a lot of good stuff in there. Highlights: Help!, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, Ticket to Ride, Yesterday
7. Magical Mystery Tour - For what amounts to half an album with a bunch of singles, MMT is surpisingly fluid and solid. Highlights: I Am the Walrus, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love
6. Please Please Me - A solid debut with a lot of great songs. I think I'm a little unfair with the early stuff, but the later stuff is vastly better. Highlights: I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Please Please Me, Love Me Do, Do You Want to Know a Secret, Twist and Shout
5. Rubber Soul - Now we're into the amazing stuff. Really, 1-5 are so close it's just a matter of what I'm feeling like right now. Highlights: Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Think For Yourself, I'm Looking Through You, In My Life
4. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - This is probably sacreligious to put Sgt. Pepper at 4th but I really think my top 3 are superior. Highlights: The album entire.
3. Abbey Road - From Side A and it's amazing songs and the Side B ultra medley of short songs, Abbey Road would be the perfect final album if not for Let It Be's delays. Highlights: Come Together, Something, Oh Darling, Here Comes the Sun, Because, The End
2. The White Album - Other days this might be #1 on my list, but I'll admit that Disc 2 kind of drags on. Highlights: Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Piggies, Rocky Raccoon, I Will, Mother Nature's Son, Helter Skelter
1. Revolver - One of the three best albums ever recorded (with OK Computer and London Calling). Enough said. Highlights: Just about the entire album.

U2
1. Achtung Baby 2. Joshua Tree 3. Unforgettable Fire 4. War 5. Pop 6. Zooropa 7. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb 8. October 9. All That You Can't Leave Behind 10. Boy
Comment: Pop is VERY underrated to me. Maybe folks just weren't ready for a techno-based U2.
Radiohead
1. OK Computer 2. The Bends 3. Kid A 4. Hail to the Thief 5. Amnesiac 6. Pablo Honey
Comment: Pablo Honey is just very dull compared to the other records
Pearl Jam
1. Ten 2. Yield 3. Vs. 4. Pearl Jam 5. Vitalogy 6. Riot Act 7. No Code 8. Binaural
Comment: Binaural was very boring to me.

I guess I'll take a stab at the Beatles now. I'll just do the British album releases (no Magical Mystery Tour.) This is truly difficult to rank.
12. Yellow Submarine - Honestly little more than unreleased tracks from the last few albums and re-released older songs alongside selections from the film score written by George Martin. Recommendations: All Together Now, Only A Northern Song
11. With The Beatles - Follow-up to debut album. Recommendations: All My Loving, It Won't Be Long
10. Let It Be - Uneven collection. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes dreadful. Recommendations: Two Of Us, Let It Be, Get Back
9. Please Please Me - The beginning of it all. Recommendations: Title track, Twist & Shout, Baby It's You
8. Help! - Great soundtrack to underrated movie. Recommendations: You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Act Naturally, I've Just Seen A Face, Title track
7. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Great, if not highly overrated album Recommendations: Fixing A Hole, Lovely Rita, A Day In The Life
6. Abbey Road - The Swan Song Recommendations: The 2nd half of the album
5. The Beatles - After much deliberation, this is where it belongs to me....and I can't believe it. Recommendations: Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Mother Nature's Son, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, The entire Side 2
4. Beatles For Sale - "Hi, we're the Beatles, and we've been listening to Bob Dylan." Recommendations: I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black, Eight Days A Week, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party, Every Little Thing, Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey, Rock & Roll Music
3. Rubber Soul - Amazing results of rushed album for Christmas of 1965. Recommendations: In My Life, Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You, You Won't See Me, If I Needed Someone, Girl
2. Hard Day's Night - About as perfect as a movie soundtrack can get. Recommendations - Every song
1. Revolver - Probably the best DAMN album ever made. Recommendations - Every song

Rainbow: 8th. Bent out of Shape (1983) The final opus with Turner, just before Blackmore's (and Glover's) reunion with Deep Purple. Generic AOR, average vocals, average guitar work, especially for a guy like Ritchie. 7th. Straight between the Eye (1982). Sophomore effort with Turner as frontman. Some decent easy-listening tracks, but a general feeling of "been there, done that". 6th. Stranger in Us All (1995). A "reunion" album, with a brand new lineup. A part of the deal Blackmore got when he re-reunited with Deep Purple in 1993. Features a couple of good tracks (Ariel) and a very good version of Still I'm Sad [already performed on Rainbow's debut album]. 5th. Difficult to Cure (1981). New singer Joe Lynn Turner debuts on a solid rock album. The highlights of the albums are Blackmore's instrumentals, the title track being an arrangement of Beethoven's 9th. Genius or self-consciousness? Great either way 4th: Down to Earth (1979). Dio leaves, in comes Graham Bonnet, for a radical change of tone. Now Rainbow are more radio friendly, but with some quality in it. Nice cover of Since you've been gone, All Night Long among the "forte" of the album. 3rd: Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975). Unhappy with Deep Purple's bluesy direction, Blackmore quit and form his own band taking over ELF. The debut album is a nice little gem. Man on the Silver Mountain and Sixteenth Century Greensleeves showcase Ritchie's skills at creating powerful riffs, while Catch the Rainbow, the Temple of the King are a welcome slowdown. Nice cover of Still I'm Sad [Yardbirds?] 2nd. Long Live Rock 'n Roll (1978). Dio's final work with Rainbow, and the most cohesive. Kill the King and the title track provide the power, Gates of Babylon is mesmerizing, and Rainbow Eyes shows an unexpected, soft, side of Dio. 1st. Rising (1976). Rainbow's masterpiece. Stargazer alone is a classic. The album is all-around rock solid. N.B. Rainbow (much like Deep Purple) were 10x better live. So the top 3 studio albums can be switched without "raping" the legacy of the band. Best records to "get" Rainbow are Live in Germany 1976 and On Stage (1977).

If anyone bashes you for liking R.E.M., then they'll have to bash me about it, too. Though, on your list for highlights on UP, "Hope" should have been on there, mister. I'll do a few more later tonight. It will be Old 97's and some other band.

Okay, now it's time for some Old 97's love: 6. Early Tracks 8 songs, nothing too strong. Highlights include the songs "Ray Charles" and "Por Favor". 5. Wreck Your Life This album makes me laugh, and it's for one song, "W.I.F.E" for whatever reason always gets to me. Other fun ones include; "Victoria", "Doreen", (the awesome) "Dressing Room Walls" and "Bel Air". 4. Too Far To Care Good stuff on here. "Timebomb" starts it off in such an uproarious manner. "Broadway", "Salome", "Melt Show" and "Nite Club" are other noticeable jams. 3. Fight Songs Here ya go, when the countdown gets good. "Lonely Holiday" is such a depressing pop song. "Oppenheimer" is totally fun. "Crash on the Barrelhead" (supposedly written about Ryan Adams) is always good. "Murder (Or a Heart Attack)", "Busted Afternoon", "Nineteen", "Let the Idiot Speak" and "Valentine" make up the rest of the good on the album. 2. Drag it Up No doubt their most personal record. Highlights include: "Won't Be Home", "Coahuila", "Blinding Sheets of Rain", "Valium Waltz", "The New Kid", "Adelaide", "Friends Forever" and "No Mother". 1. Satellite Rides Perfect pop songs all through out. "Rollerskate Skinny" gets my own personal stamp of approval of being the most catchy song ever written. "What I Wouldn't Do", (for you saps out there, hehe) "Question", "Am I Too Late", "Designs on You" and (my second fav. on the album) "Book of Poems" are all worth checking out and fall in love with, much like I have.

WHY DOES EVERYONE LIKE THE WHITE ALBUM? IT'S AT LEAST TWO-THIRDS OF FILLER OR WORSE! GAHHHH! Probably because not everyone thinks it's 2/3 filler or worse. I actually like it's wierd diversity..it's like listening to a really talented down sit down and have fun with their instruments, and whatever comes out comes out.

Oh I know not everyone will think that, I'm not a moron. It's an extremely varied album and I can see why there'd be something for everyone on it; but that just makes it more confusing that so many people like so many of the songs on it. I will never understand how anybody can like listening to Revolution 9, and I'm essentially a noise terrorist. So many of its songs sound like jokes that got taken too far. But the fact that it gets voted above Abbey Road, With The Beatles, Hard Day's Night, all these other great albums...it boggles my mind.
Although admittedly, for 'Yer Blues' alone I'd probably pay the admission.
YES I'M LONELY!
