just looking back these past seven years I've come to the conclusion that anime dominated american pop culture.
it influenced one of the biggest franchises of the decade (the matrix), as well as one of the most popular shows currently going on (heroes). not to mention that it's becoming EXTREMELY popular with kids. if you don't believe me you can look into any comic book or just standard book store and see tons of manga.
hell during the 90's people didn't even know that manga existed.
I think one of the big things that helped this was the movie spirited away becoming popular due to the fact that it won best picture at the oscars.
any how, anyone think I'm a little far off by this?

Beano, Dandy along with Marvel & DC still seem to dominate my local newsagents comic book row.
Cartoons on TV do seem a little anime heavy ...

I would have to agree. I'm fairly certain that whatever decade-themed, VH1 style show is on in the future that looks back on The Naughties will include anime in a big way

It would have to get to Pokemon levels of popularity and then either stay moderatly popular or suddenly become lame.

True to an extent, but is it a "global" phenomenon like mullets and cheesy clothes in the 80s?
I guess amine's impact was more like a fad (like wrestling in mid80s and late 90s) that had and has kept its faithful following, but hasn't really marked a decade.

And they are making a Speed Racer movie. And the Animatrix, I think it's fair to say they have been slightly influenced by Anime.

Only if you're into anime.
If you're not, it didn't make a dent.

With the notable exceptions of FLCL and Cowboy Bebop, anime has barely made a dent on my radar.

Yeah I think anime will deffintely be one of the big things remembered about this decade pop culture wise although it really started to be big here in 1998 when Pokemon came out.

In comparison to PariTney RichHan, boy bands, emo, serialized dramas, Lord Of The Rings and Frat Pack movies? I don't think so. Jed Shaffer ~Sorry, I just don't see anime being celebrated on VH1 retrospectives.

Im just real glad that the fads of today arent nearly as stupid as the ones in the 80s-90s cept for maybe stuff like "emo". I mean I know everyones gonna be like "oh man I grew up in the 90s", but I aint like, bashing them, cause some cool stuff did happen. But Im talking about stupid crap like the Macarena and people waiting for days and mobbing just to get a Tickle Me Elmo. I mean yeah people wanting all this stuff on theys cellphones can be kinda made fun of, but atleast they kinda serve a purpose and do something cool. What the hell did Furbys do? Be loud and annoying, thats it...

I've seen plenty of manga in book stores. But I've never seen anybody actually buy the stuff.

I disagree....2000s are all about reality shows. Not many adults get into the anime fad. You definitely wont see elderly discussing how many episodes it took for Goku to power up, but they sure do watch Survivor, etc.

It is true, ask 100 people what "Manga" is and you'll probably get 100 blank stares. Anime and Manga are certainly out there on the shelves and pretty well available but it's still a pretty niche market in the grand scheme of things. It has it's ardent fans to be sure, but I don't see Animes in movie theaters very often (3 that I can think of actually) and Traditional comics from DC and Marvel still far out sell even the most popular of Manga titles.
