Yay or nay on this shyamalan film? On the one hand its the poignant story of a man's struggle with his personal faith as he fights to protect his family, but on the other had the main baddies are aliens that can master intersteller travel but they can't open a locked door. Discuss!

Discuss! YAY definately. Why do people bring up that locked door nonsense? If you were sent back to the Middle Ages in Medieval Europe and fell into a deep hole dug by peasants.... ...despite your I-POD and cellphone and other technical wonders of 2007, your ass would still be stuck. So thats why I can accept the idea of aliens trapped in a closet. Besides, using a bigass ray gun would sorta give your presence away to the people you're eating, right? I really liked SIGNS, and in fact my only problem with it is the Water nonsense. Some people I know argue to me that the water thing is okay because its "sci-fi." I say ok, I take certain reaches & things, but because water is the basis of biological life* in itself, its the sort of science jump I can't go for. Still, I liked the movie. SIGNS (2002) - ***1/2 *=To quote Frank Herbert's DUNE..."The Water Is Life!"

yeah, that water thing is pretty messed up, if those Aliens hated it they'd die the second they came out of their ships, if you hadn't noticed (especially on muggy days) water is IN the freeking air itself, Earth is it self is 70% water, heck Human beings have about the same amount, they'd die just from eating us. If those Aliens really hated water, they'd stay FAR away from Earth AKA Water.

I think the movie makes it clear that its liquid concentrated water.....hell, dialogue makes it clear in the movie that they stayed away from lakes.

Two inches of wood stopping you from getting to what you traveled across the universe is alot different then falling in some huge hole with a music player. The whole world already knew they were there, the aliens wanted to know, so why cant they just melt or blast the door down? But yeah I liked it. Was cool to have an alien movie that didnt have like huge battles and stuff. Was alot more realistic...

If he/she is not armed with a gun*, how would they escape from the pantry the door? My analogy still works. My point was that just because you have great technology, it doesn't mean you're immune to physical obstacles, even primitive trappings like a closet. *=Plus, unless I'm wrong, their weapon was a poison gas that may or may not be a biological function of theirs. Why bother with rays or bullets if your body is the weapon?

But saying that Water is all life. Yes Water is the base of Organic Life. Who says that the alianes are not a Carbon Based lifeform?

Had some interesting ideas, but to me each M. Night movie seems to get worse than the one before it.

I guess its like some sci-fi tales that have Warp-Drive or teleportation, or any other STAR TREK physics invention. Maybe I shouldn't be actually be bothered with it?

I thought it was his best, and really since it came out right when 9/11 was still on our minds, it kinda hit home.

Really good timing too, sort of like how ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK hit American theatres maybe 6 months after the Iranian hostage crisis was finally resolved. Still, anyone remember that Newsweek cover from back when SIGNS came out? "Shymalan: The Next Spielberg"

I loved Signs.
Sure there are some plot holes..but nothing to detract from the movie.

Sure there are some plot holes..but nothing to detract from the movie. I disagree entirely. The two arguments brought up before, about the locked doors and landing on a planet where 3/4's of it is covered in the very thing that kills them, is enough to jar me out of it. It's sloppy, bushleague writing. Jed Shaffer ~And the performances ... did everyone on the set down a fifth of NyQuil before the cameras rolled?

Well, someone that can watch a pro wrestling match and suspend disbelief enough to react as if they are actually in a competition can suspend it enough to simply go along with the plot holes. Which honestly...maybe it was the chlorinated water they didn't like..(and they didnt know if the lakes were treated with chlorine or not just to be safe.) As for being in a locked pantry..he didnt seem to have weapons.and if it was strong enough and locked tight enough maybe he couldnt get out. Or maybe not. I liked the movie anyway.
