Their dad taught them. Remember the scene where they visit their dad at the prison camp? They explain it during that part. Their dad taugh them how to take down the Soviet Army with guerrilla warfare tactics? Their dad showed them how to properly use a hand-held surface-to-air missile?

It's a decent movie. My only question is - to everyone who deems this movie a right wing wank job or paranoia fest (which it is, don't get me wrong) or yada yada yada, just what nice, creative name do you have for movies like "V for Vendetta" or "Syriana"? Surely those movies are just as paranoid if not more so.
Or mods, you can delete this post if you wish. This movie just brings forth too many politics.

VFV was a pretty good movie, unti the 3rd act that I've slapped about in my review, which brings it down a good if messy picture. DAWN is a decent flick, better than its reputation holds for it, with some good moments. Sorta cheesy, but so too were many WW2 flicks in the 50s that Milius was ripping off. Interesting to note, notice that both were visibly influenced by the very leftist THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS.

I liked it. My dad's actually said that the ending is great with the hero and villian stalking each other in the rail yard with machine guns

The disgruntled antagonist stalking the wounded Sheen and Swayze, then confronting them face to face for the first time....and its kids. He lets them go, and walks off, back to his home in Havana...enough of this nonsense. One thing I always dug Milius' pictures was his sense of a code of honor among an elite sect of warriors, much like the Samurai pictures or the westerns of the same cinema era, the myth of adversarial respect. Really, alot of that conservative wankery of the 80s from Rambo to AMERIKA are pretty damn stupid, and pretty bad works. RED DAWN though has a few nice touches that make it deserve its 3-star rating. Or pretty much the V FOR VENDETTA of the 80s for the other side of the political spectrum.

Since were digging out old favorites of my childhood, where's the Cloak and Dagger review? I've never seen it. Maybe someday.... Though I can tell you this, my next review might be another 1984 movie that was a favorite of many childhoods of many boys.

In the long line of American Propaganda this fits nicely under it's umbrella. I like the movie because it's well done and as a kid there's no way you can't like it but that's what's smurfed up about it. I tend to look down on this film and it's director quite a bit.
It's interesting because today I was listening to radio plays from the 1950s and I listen to an episode of "I was a communist for the FBI!" which was so obnoxious with it's propaganda and fear-mongering that it was entertaining just for how ridiculous it was. I thought to myself has there been anything mainstream like that in my lifetime and I couldn't think of anything. Then this thread popped up and pop there's an example.
