I want to add to the fade away theory. Brad Nowell the lead singer of Sublime actually died before the band got any real mainstream success. Their biggest hit, What I Got I believe was released shortly after his death.

Their biggest hit, What I Got I believe was released shortly after his death. That's what sucks. As unique and genre-bending as Sublime is, I wonder where they'd be today? Nirvana may be one of the biggest influences of the grunge scene or whatever but I always found them to be too stuck in their niche. Virtually all their material sounds the same to me. Slow, almost sludgy rock with Kurt doing his little talk/sing deal.
