Vince was beyond terrible, but he was coming off the heels of Monsoon-Heenan, and just prior to the golden days of JR-King.

Sure Vince sucked at naming moves, but he had an excellent energy and a great speaking voice. There's no way he could have carried commentary on his own, but that's why he was always paired with someone who actually DID know how to call the moves like Gorilla, Jim Ross, etc. This is what I think--he was fun to listen to, but made mistakes.

I didn't mind him when I was a kid, but watching the Bret DVD is really hard whenever he's calling a match. My biggest problem with him, in hindsight, is that he just promoted too much. And yes, obviously that's his job, to sell his company. But what I mean is that during every match he'd say stuff like "AND HERE'S TL HOPPER THE WRESTLING PLUMBER! IN ALL MY YEARS, I'VE NEVER SEEN A PLUMBER WHO WRESTLES! ONLY IN THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION! IT'S A WRESTLING PLUMBER, KING, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?" or "BASTION BOOGER JUST LOOKS LIKE HE STINKS. HE'S A BIG MEAN MONSTER. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION, AND HERE COMES BASTION BOOGER. ISN'T HE REPULSIVE, KING?" He just came off like a carnival barker at a freak show.

Vince wasn't an announcer, he was a schill. Before he owned the company, he was a schill for his dad. And he was damn good at it. Some of my favorite McMahon Announcing bits...
1. "Mirror"="MIRRAH". He still says this one. Makes me tingle.
2. Dancing with the Funkettes.
3. Interaction with Jesse. If you have the bonus Hogan disc from Wal-Mart, those two SNME matches vs Harley Race and Terry Funk are GOLD in terms of commentary. "I suppose you condone this, McMahon!"
4. One of the all-time greatest heel actions is made even better by Vince. When Jake Roberts had the cobra bite Savage, Vince is practically in tears. The final shot of Jake laughing while the cobra's raised off the mat is MADE by Vince screaming "He's snapped! Jake Roberts...Jake Roberts IS SICK!!!!!!"

Vince ws as great of a commentator as you as WWF could use back in the day. Remember, times were totally different then. The standards of what a good commentator was then were different than they were now, so you can't be a fan of only today's product, and just watch tapes of people from back then and compare.
For example, we're saying that Vince was a bad commentator back then because be "blew the moves", but it wasn't about the moves back then, it wasn't a top prioroty. Vince knew the moves, but the important thing in the early to mid 90's was the storytelling, and Vince put EVERYONE over. He didn't just say "what a move", he said it in a way that put the guy over, like he didn't know what it was, even if it was simple. Back then, it worked because people would watch for those things, theyd watch for the pain or the win, if someone's shoulders were on the matt, they'd be paying close attention to it, which is where the " 1....2...HE GOT HIM...NO, he didn't" came from. No one was watching to anilyze the match or the commentating, or if they knew what the moves were.
If someone used the indian death lock, he wouldn't say, "thats an indian deathlock", he'd say, wow, he's twisting his knee with that thing!! get him off of him!! break the hold!! It's more storytelling.
