It's a double edged sword to be honest.
On one hand you have the undoubted entertainment that heel announcers bring when arguing with their face counterparts. JR and Heyman was gold all the way through their run for example. JBL is a heel announcer in the sense that he would continue his heel act in his interview, like with Rey, but he still openly praises faces too much to be a true heel. He gives Palumbo for example a heck of a lot of praise, and you'd think a heel commentator in full swing would find something derogatory to say about him.
Which leads me to think the WWE just don't want heel commentators. I think they are making a conscious decision on it, because I think they believe having both announcers but a wrestler over can be more beneficial to them.
I'm in two parts about whether this is useful or not. On the one hand it could help having both announcers agree that this guy coming down the aisle is abosolutely the bees knees, and maybe fans will start to believe it if it is perceived to be the majority opinion. It could also help avoid situations where the heel announcer makes a hilarious but derogatory comment about a face that the face commentator can't come back at, and while it may be funny, in the long run it could stop that face from gaining crediblity. On the other hand though, if one announcer says something derogatory about a wrestler, whoever 'should' be defending him, will do so strongly, with more feeling, because they will be having a reasonable - as far as wrestling goes - debate. The arguments will be more believable and passionate, which would have helped overness.
As I said, it's a double edged sword.
I agree that the fans turned King. It would have been strange for him to suddenly start slagging off the guys for actions that he previously loved.
I would absolutely love Ric Flair as a heel commentator. With JR or Cole, both would work. If he can't work a ring anymore, give Flair this role now. Booker would also be good, and ironic if he was to keep his King gimmick, and replace Lawler on commentary.
