Squash matches will NOT work anymore. This idea comes up every week. may not work, but they still do it. Have you forgotten when Umaga debuted? Or when Snitsky re debuted? That's all they did was squash matches against some random jobber to build them up as monsters. It wasn't for a while that they got into some type of fued. Heck, even now Umaga gets squash matches against some random jobber when in between fueds or to feed Vince's ego. He just had one a few weeks ago that Vince was taunting and had Umaga destroy him. Umaga was put in there with main eventers, but Snitsky was given squashes and look how over he is.

Yeah he's really popular with the crickets and frogs in the audience.

Hmm, The WWE is on the CW. That's Prime time local television, which is better exposure than it could hope for with Syndication. Although, I'm sure Heat and ECW could be converted to Syndication if they wanted to. But in any case, how much independent television is left?

I remember RVD did an interview on Off The Record a while ago, and said he would like to see more "squash matches" on TV because it would give a wrestler the chance to show off his moveset without hurting the credibility of an established guy. I happen to agree with that reasoning. I hated getting PPV quality matches for free every week. What incentive did I have for paying money to see it on PPV then?
The newer generation of fans (who grew up on the Monday Night War era) will never appreciate or like squash matches. I came to grips with that reality many years ago. The days of seeing squashes every week and then staying up to watch SNME anticipating Hogan taking on Sika are no longer here unfortunately. Since Nitro came on, everything had to be given away for free in order to keep ratings up, and even well after WCW was bought, the WWF/E still incorporated that weekly format. I haven't watched the WWE in three years, but I'd imagine they are still doing that now.
Will sqaush matches work in a post-MNW, ADD-driven society? Probably not. Although, the WWE has been drawing 3.5 ratings (give or take) for five years despite giving away matches for free every week. I think it's safe to assume the WWE knows their core fans will watch ANYTHING they throw on TV, so I doubt it would make much of a difference ratings-wise.

The way it is now is pretty much the way it stays.
Like someone previously mentioned, WWE now competes with TV shows from various genres and no longer other wrestling companies. It is unlikely that things will change so drastically because in terms of profits and currently functionality of the promotion in this area, WWE is real stable.

I think a good medium should be in place. How about matches where maineventers and uppermidcarders fight midcarders and lower midcarders on RAW and Smackdown. It can serve as a testing ground for potential wrestlers and it won't feel watching a ppv everyweek. Another half of the show can be used to build up feuds for the next ppv. I think this could potentially work.
