Sigourney Weaver was kinda hot in it, too.

Sigourney Weaver was kinda hot in it, too. Yeah she was, in a MILF sort of way. My favorite laugh has to be when she says "Oh Hell no!" while her mouth is wording out a F-bomb...

MIAMI VICE (2006) - ***1/2 (NOTE: This is a review of the Theatrical Edit)At a beachfront property where the Miami Vice police squad is blackmailing a narcotics middle-man to set-up a deal with his employers.Colin Farrell then looks out into the distance and sees the endless horizon of the ocean waters. He and partner Jamie Foxx will soon head there, behind enemy lines, beyond any hope of rescue or back-up. If they are to return alive, they will have to resort to their smarts and gaul to escape this awful world of the drug cartels. I got some heat from some of my friends for liking this movie, but I think MIAMI VICE is a rare summer blockbuster where its more of a cop-drama than a cop-action in the vein of LETHAL WEAPON or BAD BOYS. This is more like SERPICO or PRINCE OF THE CITY, or even KING OF NEW YORK. Except with a $120+ million budget with a problematic production that got more headlines than the film itself. Plus, its nice for a Miami-native like myself to see a movie display the city's beauty and ugliness at night. Usually for Hollywood, Miami is only South Beach. While the city itself is shown briefly, its nice that writer/director/producer Michael Mann brought his cinematic treatment of Los Angeles down south by further pushing the limits of the digital cinematography that was used partially on COLLATERAL. Take an early sequence when Mann cuts between the heroes trying to figure out what the hell went wrong, the exposed-informant running his ass out of town, and the Aryan Brotherhood-led massacre at a botched drug deal. While what we see is already taunt with suspense, the digital look amps up the atmosphere of dread and thrills to a considerable degree. VICE should have gotten an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. Saying that, I wasn't a fan of the TV series. It came off to me as more Grilled Cheese than Hard-Boiled. Mann takes the characters and premise and re-works them for the crime reality of this decade. If Cocaine was gold in the '80s, where gangs had Wild West chainsaw fights on the streets over supremacy of the industry, Miami has become the "Casablanca of the Caribbean." It's where anyone can get anything, and where anyone can be whacked by everyone. From the pastels and sockless leather shoes, MIAMI VICE is placed in the same aueurship of Mann's HEAT and COLLATERAL. In fact, that might be my problem with MIAMI VICE. Those Mann-helmed crime pictures were dramatic with the personalities of the actors, and their relationships with each other. With VICE, the only chemistry we see cooking is when Farrell and Gong Li engage in their fated affair. For buddies/partners, Farrell and Foxx lack any sort of real connection. Then again, Farrell slugged the prima-donna Foxx during the shoot, so I'm not shocked. MIAMI VICE won't be remembered by anyone as a Mann career highlight, but it delivers as escapist fare with thrills, drama, and a pinch of reality. Much like THE WIRE, its about the men and women of law enforcement keeping up the good fight in the War on Drugs, and the endless number of dealers and street soldiers as the big fish always seem to slip away from the fingers of justice. In other words, just another day on the job.

Yo, rra, you ever seen 'Electric Dreams'?
If so, what do you think of it?

How about some reviews of stephen king films, especially creepshow? A good idea! I'm working on a review of Darabont's recent THE MIST, and THE DEAD ZONE has been on my vision for some time.

Folks, for 2008, I've gotten the plan to simplify my Archives by re-organizing the franchises (Bourne, DIE HARD, etc.) and BOMBS, among other things. That should simplify the situation and make it easier for your eyes.
More recommendations for future reviews are always welcomed, just drop them here.

Saw another darn good movie that's rather underrated, unfortunately....even among us film snobs. John Sayles' LIMBO (1999). I'll review it sometime this week.

I just saw Ballad of Jack and Rose for a 2nd time (first since it came out), and would be interested in your thoughts on it, if you've seen it.

I thought that you did one on Remo Williams, but I don't see it here. Yeah, I haven't uploaded the last few reviews I penned yet. Just go back through the pages of Off-Topic. You'll find it.
