I'm not one by any means, but this is something that's always baffled me.
Does this have something to do with the idea that emos are unmanly because they show emotion, which is what I suspect? Or is it because they're perceived as pretentious for whatever reason?
(Quick note: Don't turn this into a joke thread. I'd like serious answers.)

I don't really know. I always found Goths much more unappealing anyway (mainly because the ones at my school somehow found a way to be depressed and unhappy about everything--even the rare days I enjoyed!)
I think it has something to do with perceived "artistic" pretentiousness of some sort.

I guess it's because they are daring to be different. My experience with the emo's is that they are a pretty passive bunch, making them an easier target for those that like to mock.

That's what it is for me. "Daring to be different" by assimilating into a group like that. Also, they often are known to "whine" about very ridiculous things.... relationships. mean parents. etc.

Because they're whiney.
Everyone on this planet has to put up with crap on a daily basis.
Putting black dye in your hair and writing about how much it sucks because your mom asked you to do the dishes while she was out is pathetic.
Everyone has the right to be emotional. Man, woman or child.
But lazy, whiney teenagers who think the worst pain in life is breaking up with a girl he's only known for a month..I'm not gonna say 'should be killed' but they should get a hard slap and wake up to the world.

Im not really sure what Emo is, I graduated from High School 10 years ago and certainly didnt know anybody who fit that trend in college.. If an Emo is a person who whines because teenage life sucks well hop on the bandwagon and welcome to reality. Now get over yourself and join the football team.

Never met one, so I can't really tell what they are.
I'll take a blind guess and I'll say they're the butt of so many jokes because they look different and they're perceived as whiny attention whores.

*old man mode*
Back in my day, most either liked heavy metal or rave and you were obliged to hate the out group. Both groups bound together to hate the Indy kids though, maybe they were the emo's of the day. I've been drinking today, I like everybody.

Don't worry, I only graduated 4 years ago, and this "emo" thing was unheard of when I was in school. I'm still not really sure what it is, but I think what it's stereotyped as is a halfassed goth, who likes to cut themselves and believes nobody has problems but them. So if I met someone like that, ya I'd probably hate and or puch them

Some people don`t like things that are different. I don`t give a rats ass how you or anyone else dresses or acts unless it`s causing harm or alarm to me or others.
Live and let live.
I know a girl who would be considered Emo and every other week on her Bebo page is a new blog about how someone broke her heart 2 days after meeting them and declaring her love. It`s pathetic. But I don`t decide, "Emos are annoying and I need to punch them". I just think, "Shut the hell up" and move on.

I feel those are personal and I don't want people to know about them. I prefer writing new "comedy material" to amuse people on this board.

Those issues right there. They're not revolutionary or rebelling against society with their attitude and their appearence; their attitude is standard issue for teenagers, and their appearence is as rebellious as Hot Topic. You don't rebel by following another crowd. Jed f'n Shaffer ~As Denis Leary said, "Life sucks, get a helmet."

Its a safe, middle class youth movement which has neither spirit or substance. The only real thread in their mindset is purposefull dis-association with society. But unlike most people they can sit comfortably in their nice bedroom safely away from the real harsh world.
All because dad never bought them a pony.

I'd honestly love to know where you people are meeting all of these "whiny, self centered drama queen" emo kids. Because I'm 16, in on the "scene" I guess, and am yet to meet one. Choppy parted hair, tight pants, and a studded belt doesn't make you a whiny attention whore. It makes you a teenager with choppy parted hair, tight pants, and a studded belt...
The only reason I even bother commenting on these threads anymore is because I can't click on a single one without finding threats of violence against a pre conceived perception group of kids who don't even exist. I'm fairly sure that most of the people who have such a problem with "emo" kids are yet to even meet anyone who lives up to that stereotype. Because I sure as hell haven't. And I can't overstate enough how emo doesn't define a group of people. It defines a genre of music. Which doesn't even exist anymore.
