I keep hearing different things from different people. Some say that it's looked on as primarily being for children, much like in America. Other people say that it's taken a bit more seriously. Otakus here, help me- which is closer to the truth?
EDIT: I apologize for the accidental double-post.

As far as I know, every genre of anime has its main target of consumers. There's stuff for kids, for teenage girls, for teenage boys and for adults. The sexual-ambiguous-borderline paedophiliac undertones are cross-genre though I'm not too sure about how animes are peceived in a "moral" sense, but I suppose they're widely accepted as just another form of entertainment. I remember reading the Japanese soccer team were allowed to have anime in their World Cup headquarters. Instead of their women's visits...

Anime is taken very seriously in Japan. Its an accepted art form enjoyed by all ages. The Appleseed Ex Machina special 2 disc edition has a good documentary on it if your interested.

I gotta start by saying I don't watch Anime at all. Once when I was 12, my friend invited me over to watch something I "had to see". It was a video of topless anime girls swimming and playing in the water or something. That was when his mom walked in. It was maybe the most awkward moment of my life. What would you say if you caught your son and his friend watching naked cartoons?

Like Ninja Scroll and Armitage III, unto which I never hear anyone EVER talk about. Tenchi Muyo and Cowboy Bebop are probably my favorite ones I ever hear mentioned, and they aren't talked about that much now that they don't run on Cartoon Network anymore.

Ah, you're pretty much from around the same era I got heavily into anime..when it wasn't QUITE as big in the US as it is now. Armitage III and Ninja Scroll are both awesome, yeah. And TM and Cowboy Bebop are two of my favourites that have stuck with me. I miss those days.

I don't get it. Wouldn't they just be percieved as we do our own cartoons as cartoons?

I miss the days before everyone went Anime nutso as well. Granted thanks to these days I was able to learn about Cowboy Bebop, but before that it was mostly me jsut getting into stuff via my own curiosity, mostly mecha stuff like Robotech and the Gundam series. Says a lot about my eccentricities that my favorite series is After War Gundam X, the only Gundam series to be cancelled during its run (besides the first one) and a series that never made it stateside.
Anyways yeah, it's more viewed as an artform over there, and in different genres etc. as mentioned before.

Anime in Japan is the most common thing on TV. Several channels in Japan specialize in showing nothing but anime.
Basically, take our view and acceptance on cartoons in general and reverse it. Everything....
For example, in Japan there is anime for all age groups. Here, it pretty much is either for kids, or for adults. No real middle ground.
Also, You think the tv dramas in the West are serious and well acted out? Many of the adult anime series have just as good of acting, if not better, than dramas here. And they are only using their voices in Japan!
Oh, and they tend to get away with a lot more things in Japan than here.

Also, I used to be completely obsessed with Ryoko. Now I'm only 1/2 obsessed, as in I keep it to myself.

My belief is that anime is perceived in Japan as an adaptation of real life.
