I listen to Mayhem, Burzum and Emperor being aware of their backstory. In an odd way, their actions fit their characters and their music, so it's kinda part of their nature (or gimmick if you think it's "staged").
That doesn't mean I agree with the church-burning [it's stupid and ignorant even though I see the reasons behind their actions], nor I condone murder.
you don't get thrown in prison for 20 years for "staged" criminal acts. just saying. that said, I too love Burzum and Dissection. Emperor, you can't really let it affect the music because the murderer in that band only played drums on their first album, and arguably their better material was made after he left, plus he didn't write anything when he was in the band anyway.
