The original Truth commercials, I could understand and actually got behind, but the last few years? It is as if they are trying to make people continue smoking. YeahI agree they have become increasingly more ridiculous and over the top. I hate how they have this overly preachy vibe and aura about them.

It's amusing the first time I see it, then I just want to stab my ears with rusty shrimp forks.
Telling people that smoking will kill you and providing graphic representations: I got no problem with that. Making your whole message that tobacco companies are evil incarnate and are responsible for your personal choices: screw off (The worst were those "Fair Enough" skits back in about 2005). That's why we're such a litigious society-there's no such thing as personal responsibility anymore.

I think it's funny that all of these anti-drug/alchohol/smoking ads so completely miss the point of why it's bad to abuse these substances.
It should be: If you smoke, you're probably going to get cancer, you will spend the last several years of your life bedridden and in tremendous pain. You will s*** and piss in a bedpan and then a nurse who doesn't speak your language and hates their job will wipe your ass only half-clean. You will literally be wallowing in your own s*** because your children can't afford to care for you. Then you will die alone and nobody will know or care until they find your body the next morning.
Don't drink because you end up homeless and sick nobody will care if you die. -This also applies to hard drugs, only you will also resort to having sexual relations with strangers and will likely be raped just trying to get high.
And, it's silly, because South Park gave the best reason I;ve ever eard for nit smoking pot, [paraphrased] "Pot makes you 'okay' with being bored; when you should be learning some new skill or science, you smoke pot and just... don't."
There are real reasons not to engage in subtance abuse, these ads never present any of them.

Ironically, one of those ads used that exact same argument. Of course, on the flip side, South Park can often be as black and white as any of those commercials. I try to ignore sources that only want to sell me on their agenda--whatever it may be. They do sometimes, but they often come off as preachy, pretentious assholes, which makes me hate them. I really wish there were no Turth or Free Vibe commercials honestly. They don't do much good and are often mocked, both by people who do smoke and those who don't. As for the War on Drugs, I'm all for ending it. And I've never done drugs or smoked in my entire life (and never plan to). That doesn't mean I expect others to act the same way or judge them.

I think they don't want people to quit smoking. That's why the ads are so stupid that nobody could take them seriously. They're probably paid for by tobacco companies. They are

I guess if you want people to stop smoking, you have to threaten them with a branding iron and not truth commercials.

I thought that new marijuana commercial was funny where the kid is smoking pot in a chair at his parents house and he just grows older there. Why don't they show him turning into Eminem or Curt Kobain or some famous successful drug user? Drugs are bad but they do go way out of context. Also why don't they target alcohol? That drug is by far worse than any other drug. All they have for that is "Don't drink and drive." commercials. Why don't they make Anti-Alcohol commercials where the person drinks and murders someone, or robs some place? That would make about as much sense. There is also some kind of syndrome from drinking alcohol during pregnancy that can also harm the baby, but will they talk about that? Someone should make a thread on other things that the media could take out of context. After watching Bowling for Columbine it is funny to see how our country lives in fear because of the media. They should make up a commercial about how statistics say that most deaths take place outside the home, "Play it SAFE, Don't LEAVE YOUR HOME."

Ding ding ding! Welcome to the new America! Where no one is responsible for their own actions anymore! What a great place eh? Here's the Truth for the Truth people: All of the things you say in your ads may be true. Who cares. Here's one more truth. Not once has a tobacco executive forced anyone to smoke at gunpoint. Smoking is a choice. Eating fast food: choice. Driving 100mph, choice. Sheesh Is no one at fault for their own actions?

Since the tobacco industry finances these, I think they decided that the older commercials actually made somewhat of an impact, and made them start doing this crap. You know like digging press releases from like the 50s and going around yelling about it...

I'm really confused by the Disney kick they're on lately. I mean, if you've taken so much out of your message that you have to add in cartoon characters in post-production, well one, you've lost out on sending that message to the public you stand around in, and two, you've resulted in cheesy gimmicks to deliver your diluted message. Congratulations Truth, your anti-smoking campaign is slowly becoming irrelevant.
