The storyline made the match bigger, watching the match without the build up kills A LOt of matches

The most straightforward explanation I can give is "I can watch it over and over again and not get sick of it", which is my basic criteria for a classic match.

The atmosphere of 78,000 people getting into a match like this makes it even better. At some point, the crowd was just worn out, so the wrestlers took it a notch down to let them catch their breath.
This, my friends, is how to work psychology into a match. Don't overwhelm them, otherwise you'll lose the crowd.

I'm old school, but watching this a couple years ago, the match was a little underwhelming. There was nothing wrong with it, but afterwards, I had no particular desire to see it again. I don't remember much about it, though.

Watch the rest of the card, you'll see why it's a classic in comparrison.

Didnt Hogan tell Vince to get rid of Steamboat after WM 3 cause of that match?

What made it so special, at least at the time, was that it was so unlike the rest of the product. It holds up as a damn fine match, but not "greatest of all time" material. Still, placing it against what was offered at the time, it's revolutionary by comparison.

I didn't see the WWF a lot. NWA wrestling was on TV a lot more around here. That may have something to do with how I perceive this match. I guess this match was a different style than WWF fans were used to seeing?

Didnt Hogan tell Vince to get rid of Steamboat after WM 3 cause of that match? That's the first I've heard of this, and I've not heard Steamboat say anything like that in his shoots.

Didnt Hogan tell Vince to get rid of Steamboat after WM 3 cause of that match? If he did, Vince didn't listen. Steamboat was with the company for over a year after WM 3.

I watched it again recently, and it still holds up. It's not blinding, dizzying wrestling, but it's impeccably executed, with a fantastic storyline.

I remember thinking at the time that after such a long build up, and after the brilliant match and victory, why did The Dragon drop the belt so quickly to the HTM?

I remember thinking at the time that after such a long build up, and after the brilliant match and victory, why did The Dragon drop the belt so quickly to the HTM? He was supposed to get a long title reign according to his shoot. Him and Vince discussed it in November 86 that he would have the belt close to a year, but when his wife was pregnant and he wanted time off, Vince wanted him to drop the belt to Butch Reed, but he didn't show up and HTM was there so he got it instead.

So if things were different and Steamboat did have the title close to a year, who would he have lost it to?

So if things were different and Steamboat did have the title close to a year, who would he have lost it to? I can't say, but I know the Savage/Steamboat feud would've continued as on the May 87 SNME, Savage helps Steamboat (sorta) against Hercules and wanted to beat Steamboat for the title himself. I'm thinking they would've had a cage match on TV (maybe SNME) as they were doing it a lot on the house show circuit to finish the feud and maybe feud with a Butch Reed or Rick Rude to close out the year.
