I know that this angle is generally considered one of the low points in the Nature Boy's career, but somehow, Flair managed to make it work. Maybe it had to due with Flair still being able to cut an entertaining promo in the face of an otherwise demeaning and cornball angle:

The only way that could have been worse is if Flair really lost it and started to use the Black Scorpion voice box and did black magic tricks for the people at the mental hospital.....

How or why did WCW think an angle like that was going to get there ratings back up?

How or why did WCW think an angle like that was going to get there ratings back up? For whatever the reasons, WCW felt the need to one way or another, figure out ways to bury Flair. It became a running joke that whenever WCW was about to do a show in the Carolinas (where Flair was for the longest time, a hometown hero, dating back to WCW's days as Jim Crockett Promotions), something bad was bound to happen to him.

This reminded me a lot of the Mankind/Stone Cold and Vince in the hospital skit except not as well done of course.

Seeing Ric being driven to the nut house is one of my first Nature Boy memories
I think the angle could have worked if they didn't show him In the godamn nut house.,

I love Flair, and even though it was meant to bury him, I found it quite hilarious for whatever reason. I dunno. Piss Poor, as he could've beena huge asset to them, but whatever.

Wasn't there an angle where he got buried in a desert. Or am I thinking of somthing else I believe there was something like that when the NWO in masks beat him up, taking their masks off afterward for no reason, and then driving away while leaving him in a desert. Then a country bumpkin showed up, put him in the back of a turnip truck, and drive him to back to the arena where I think he got beat up again.

Getting beat up by the NWO happened early 1999 and the other incident happened late 99 or early 2000. And for the above post that was Asya. It was funny to see Scott Hall, though they never explained the connection. He had been absent for months and they thought it would be funny just to put him there. It was ... but when people see a wrestler they expect an explanation. To make matters worse they announced Flair's release on Thunder then on Nitro it hadn't happened. But later Arn Anderson "bailed him out". To get the best explanation of that and a lot more read "Death of WCW" by RD Reynolds and Bryan Alvarez.

Ya know what I think is the single best thing about it all?
A British film crew filming a documentary on Wrestling for the BBC, and the host had been looking down his nose at things, until he had a great talk with Roddy Piper and began to respect the guys, then he went out into the crowd to watch Nitro.
It was the night Flair got sent to the asylum, and he lost his respect again.

I actually thought these were hilarious...WCW was already an insane asylum in itself at this point and I thought these vignettes were wonderful...specially Hall's random appearance when we havent seen him for awhile and just his silent stare then tossing of the toothpick...It was great

I still prefer this to the final years of Flair's WWE career.

Notice one of the patients does the finger wiggle when Hall shows up, too.

By the way, the one in late 1999 with Flair getting buried involved The Filthy Animals. During that moment, I wasn't sure if they were trying to be tweeners or heels. I mean, sure, they were faces on Nitro and such, but then you had that storyline involving David Flair and them. Then came Halloween Havoc and Flair came out and gave Torrie a kiss. He had an ovation. Then Flair had his match with Page later that night, and I know he was a heel then. After the match, Flair was rolled off in a stretcher, then out of nowhere, The Filthy Animals hijacked the ambulance (Don't remember it fully. Been a while since I saw that match) and kidnapped Flair, only to try to bury him alive.

And a month after being beaten like Nicky in Casino in the corn field. They do the double turn at Uncensored and Hogan is the good guy now and the fans cheer him. WCW was definately drinking their own ****ty water in 99.
