What were the best and worst use of celebrities on The Simpsons. And I'm referring to when they played themselves, not voiced some random character.
In my opinion, the best was Aerosmith (in Flaming Moes). They had a believable reason to be in Springfield, were mocked in humorous fashion and stuck around for more than just one scene, but still didn't take away from the overall plot to the point the entire show revolved around the band. Plus, they were involved in the episode's final gag.
The worst appearance came from Bob Newhart in the episode Krusty faked his death. He didnt' really add much to the plot, and was really there as a token celebrity guest. He appeared for about 30 seconds during the funeral scene, and he even said he was there for a different service.
What would you all say?

Best : I'll get back to you on that one.
Worst : Bret Hart. They just needed a stereotyped big growling wrestler for a throwaway gag. So they get the wrestler who was the complete opposite of big and growling.

I always thought this began and ended with 'Homer at the Bat'.

Bret Hart being the worst should be unanimous. Metallica sucked too.

Best : I'd say Ringo Starr. McCartney's made more sense with the vegetarian tie-in and George Harrison being at the Grammy's is believable. But although it's the stupidest of the ex-Beatles appearances, I love it.

The Episode where Homer helps Mel Gibson spice up "Mr Smith Goes to Washington". Beyond Blunderdome, I believe was the episode name.
I loved how Mel spent most of his time re-enforcing his stereotype and bashing Hollywood.
Oh, and it brought us this:
Most Hated: The episode where Homer does stuff with one of the Baldwins, Kim Basinger and Ron Howard. It just felt so.... forced.

The Bret one was pretty awful. The year was what, 1996? For big and growling they should have gone to WCW and got the Giant. Bret wasn't the worst though, Mel Gibson was. The Simpsons really began to decline at the start of that season IMO.
The best for me were Cypress Hill as I'm a huge fan of them and all the baseball stars in Homer at the Bat. I didn't know anything about baseball the first time I saw that episode but I've learnt about them over the years and it remains one of my favourite eps of all time. The ending song was amazing too.

I don't really know which one for me is the best, but one of the funniest I think was Ron Howard. He did a good job being the straight man to Homer's shenanigans as well as being the pompous Hollywood producer guy.
As for the worst, I guess I say Mel Gibson as well. Although, I still mark out for the shifty-eye dog

Dennis Rodman was the worst. He was on for like 20 second and really did nothing.

No, Bret Hart may be a bit role, but think about it, it's a job Hank Azaria would have done anyways, so if you can get a minor celeb voice in, that's fine. I mean, The Simpsons has had some really bad voiceovers throughout the years.
Also tie between The Springfield Files as it combines everything I liked in 1997, and James Earl Jones voicing Maggie for best.

I love the episodes that Leonard Nimoy appears in. I thinks it's only the two episodes (Marge vs. the Monorail, The Springfield Files) he has been in. But he was great and funny in both of them. He is great in Futurama as well I really did not like it when N*SYNC guest starred. They were a product of their time and that episode now looks pretty dated because of that. Plus I hated them and boybands in general.

Although, that was probably due to the whole only around for four seasons thing.
