Isn't the standard team 7 members long, with one or two reserve members?
My ideal Avengers team would be this:
Leader: Captain America (Steve Rogers) - Like someone else said, it's just not the Avengers without Cap, and there is only 1 Captain America worthy of the role.
Thor - The second of the Big Three who fits the need for a muscleman very nicely. Plus, I like the way he talks.
Ironman - The third of the Big Three. To me, Ironman is almost as symbolic of the Avengers as Cap is.
Hawkeye - I always thought he worked perfectly in a team with Cap. And none of this Ronin crap. Hawkeye as a ninja just doesn't feel right.
Scarlet Witch - I don't care if she's just a plot device; I've always liked this character.
Vision - One of my favorite characters, and one who is a perfect fit in the Avengers. And I prefer the classic version, not the teenaged Vision/Iron Lad one that's running around these days.
Black Knight - Another of my favorite characters, and one I really wish would have been a mainstay on the team during the years I was reading the comic.
Reserve Members:
Quasar - I'm not sure what's going on with the character these days (is he insane? dead? both?), but I always liked him and his powers, so I wouldn't mind him being a recurring character in an Avengers comic.
Juggernaut - I was a big fan of J2 from A-Next, so it'd be cool to see the original Juggernaut have a connection with the team.

I know this'd never work, but...its an (oooooooh aaaaaah) ALTERNATE REALITY so just go with it. In MY dimension, the Avengers are actually the Revengers.....no wait that name sounds stupid. They're still the Avengers, but the team has a bit of a dark attitude as they've all got assorted chips on their shoulders and have no patience for their enemies, or one another, only existing as a team to unleash the most painful justice on their collective enemies as possible. 1 - Leader: The Punisher, Frank Castle. Why? No one can put together an impromptu plan like this man except for John "Hannibal" Smith, but he's dead. Sure, most of his plans consist of "Go inside, kill everything, leave." but they don't often fail. 2 - The Hulk 3 - Wolverine 4 - Ghost Rider 5 - Captain America (Steve Rogers raised from the dead, none of this Winter Soldier crap. Of course that very well may've already happened as I just don't read comics all that much.) 6 - Venom I'm no fan of the Winter Soldier, but wouldn't his version of Cap fit on your team better? I mean, as he's a former assassin who carries a gun, I think he'd be more likely to contribute to a team of violent killers than the true Cap would.

The team I love, finally. There are a million dreamteam combos for me. Here is one of them, I guess.
Leader: [glow=blue,2,300]Captain America[/glow] (Steve Rogers) Co-Leader: [glow=yellow,2,300]Wasp [/glow]
[glow=white,2,300]Thor[/glow]
[glow=red,2,300]Scarlet Witch[/glow]
[glow=gray,2,300]Quicksilver[/glow]
[glow=orange,2,300]Carol Danvers[/glow]
[glow=gray,2,300]Black Panther[/glow]
Alternates/Frequent Guest Appearances: [glow=purple,2,300]Hawkeye and Mockingbird[/glow]
The team's first mission is go out and DESTROY any and all of the imposter or repackaged Avengers who have stolen their names (or former Avengers' names) and the writers who allowed it to happen.
I'm actually shocked at the couple of people who have a lot of these team members mentioned. I didn't think anyone would really be on that same wavelength as far as the best team ever assembled.

A valid point, and I should've fleshed out mine more, but, in my version, Cap (Rogers) is furious with the events of post-Civil War America and how his county (in his opinion) allowed him to die. He died for his country, they did nothing for him, so he's out for himself now. Again, keep in mind I barely actually have time to read comics I just try to keep up with whats going on, so my opinion here may not be the most valid.

And your opinion is as valid as any, particularly seeing as how Marvel's been jerking around the Avengers characters for the past few years anyways.
