I think it's safe to assume that music game fanboys on message boards around the internetz have had this debate, but I just want to know if I made a good purchase. Over the holidays I received, among several other things, some cash and a $50 Best Buy gift card. I wanted that dough to go towards something I could really remember, so I decided, after a long time thinking about it, to get Guitar Hero World Tour...drums, mike, and everything. It ended up costing me about $200 after taxes. I'm initially impressed, though I also read reviews of games off ign.com. According to them, this game got a 7.9, while its competitor Rock Band has yet to dive below 9.0 (granted, they only had 2 games, while GH has had 3 on the 360, only one of which was a 9).
OK, enough about that. My question is, was my investment sound or did I make a mistake?

Aren't the games pretty much the exact same thing? Only one has colored buttons and the other colored tabs?

I'm more of a Rock Band guy. Harmonix has done amazing things with the series, and the game overall, beyond feeling more polished, feels like it's actual musicians that made the game, not game designers who want to make the game difficult as opposed to fun.
Plus, it doesn't hurt that, for the most part, the soundtrack is FAR superior to GHWT. I'd gladly trade some of the songs, but overall, along with RB1 and the DLC, RB2 is leagues ahead of World Tour.

Rock Band is the better game on every level imaginable. They have you covered with a delicious catalog of DLC. I mean, it has something for everyone. Difficulty wise, if you buy the hard songs, you're in for a challenge. The songs hand selected for the game disc itself, though, are perfect for beginners and experts alike. Not to hard for new players, and just enough of a challenge for the good players.
Guitar Hero has made mistake after mistake since acquiring Red Octane over Harmonix. It's been a steady struggle for them to even hold candles to the empire Harmonix have built alongside EA and MTV. They continue to steal ideas, and half bake options and things that Rock Band don't have in order to try to get an upper hand. The music creation is beyond lame, in my humble opinion. The product placement is more than a little annoying. Rock Band does without those.
You can make figurines of your little Rock Band character. Not to mention T-Shirts. They're expensive, but the option is rad in and of itself.
I think Rock Band is the obvious decision if you're looking to enter in to the domain of Rhythm gaming. It might seem like I'm a Rock Band fanboy. I'm not. The lack of respect that Activision has given Harmonix has lead me to hate Activision. They're smug pricks, and they're getting destroyed by a superior game, and superior production.

You made a mistake.
Some other features on top of Viva Los Bio Dome!'s post:
Rock Band 2 has drum training. Not just play a song over and over till you get used to it, but it has specific sets that you go through to get you used to the motions of playing the drums.
Rock Band 2 also has a No Fail mode where, if you're drunk or whatever and just want to play with some friends, you'll go through the whole song no matter how bad you're doing.
Not only do you have access to the last game's DLC, but you also can rip songs from the last games Disc Songs. (It's a $15 charge for licencing reasons, though. But you get how many songs for just $15?)
Not that I put much stock into this, but it's worth noting that IGN rated Rock Band 2 a 9.0. while it only gave Guitar Hero 4 a 7.9!
I also wanted to point out that somebody mentioned that Guitar controllers only work from one game to the other. That is no longer the case. Sony and Microsoft forced both Harmonix and Red Octane to make their controllers work for each others games on their respective systems.

I concur. 170 songs for 75 bucks is pretty epic. It's even cheaper if you bought Rock Band 1.
