No, I'm not trying to be cool or different or what have you...
Why are these games so popular? Granted I've only played Guitar Hero for around 20 minutes, but I just don't see what the big deal is. It's Donkey Konga--but with a guitar instead of bongos.
And for the price, I can go buy a real instrument and learn to play it.
Does anyone else here not like Guitar Hero/Rock Band or am I the odd man out?

I am pretty indifferent to it. I can see why people enjoy it, it just doesnt set my world on fire.

The deal is, you get to be a rockstar without having to spend all the money on an instrument and actual lessons.
Plus, be grateful, it is making 70s and 80s rock, aka the GOOD shit, popular amongst teens and tweens now. Though sadly most of those same teens and tweens will only recognize songs like "One" by Metallica as "that one song I heard on Guitar Hero III".
And Rock Band goes even further. It allows you to form full bands without the major problems of real bands. The only problem with Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour is to get someone to be the singer......

If it was all Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Talking Heads, etc,... I wouldn't like it either. The fact that they toss some good metal songs in there is why I enjoy it.
Really, it's just another rhythm game, not unlike Dance, Dance Revolution... but, I this is one I can stand the music in.

Dance Dance Revolution is a f***ing work out....

Plus, be grateful, it is making 70s and 80s rock, aka the GOOD excretory matter, popular amongst teens and tweens now. Well, I'm definitely glad to hear that. Maybe those kids will realize that rock doesn't begin and end with Nickelback. (No offense to the Nickelback fans here).

Well it is to be expected when most of the song lists are from the 70s and 80s, and then a small portion is from the 90s and 2000s, but for those decades, they only pick the best songs. In Guitar Hero II they actually picked a GOOD My Chemical Romance song.

Same here. Singing "Eye of the Tiger" and "Band on the Run" in GH:WT is a blast. My favorites on World Tour are Livin' on a Prayer and Rebel Yell, as well as anything by Ozzy Osbourne. On Rock Band 2, Judas Priest's Painkiller is a lot of fun. For some reason though, even though I swear I always sing the "Faster than a laser bullet..." part just like Rob Halford on the original recording (in shrieking heavy metal falsetto of the highest magnitude) and don't miss a single note, the game thinks I'm doing it wrong and I almost fail the song right there. I guess my heavy metal singing is too metal for Rock Band...

I have never played the games but would quite like to. IO view it as different from learning a real instrument it is after all just a game. It be like saying whats the point in forking out for dance games when you could just go and get lessons. I think sining would be a lot of fun. It be good fun have a few mates round have bit of a drink and play guitar hero Metallica (when it comes out lol)> Which I have heard good reviews already on.
A line up I would like for one of these games is (12 songs) 12) Whiplash- Metallica 11) Rainmaker- Iro0n Maiden 10) Breadfan-Budgie 9) Symphony Of Destruction- Megadeth 8) You Could Be Mine- Guns 'N' Roses 7) Breaking The Law- Judas Priest 6) Paranoid- Black Sabbath 6) Rock 'N' Roll- Led Zeppelin 5) Lady Double Dealer- Deep Purple 4) Overkill- Motorhead 3) Iron Man- Black Sabbath 2) Running Free-Iron Maiden 1) Master Of Puppets-Metallica
Also I would like to see a few other bands (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Megadeth) get a game as well. There any many more bads way more describing and would be a lot more fun than Aerosmith. They only really have a handful of songs I like. However they did make the ultimate game in giving Metallica one. They won't do much better for Rock Band or Guitar Hero than Metallica!

Does anyone else here not like Guitar Hero/Rock Band or am I the odd man out? No. I actually had no interest in it until I played it at my buddies house. It's a fun game. However, you really need to have at least one friend to play it with you, if not more. Rock Band I mean. I can't justfy spending that kind of cash to pretend I'm in a rock band, since all the cool music in those games I own and air guitar and singing into a broom stick is free. They're fun, but they're not that fun. Also, if you're good at it, you could run through the whole game in a few hours. Then what? Then you've a $200 dust attraction, that's what.

They're mindless fun. It takes about one tenth of your brainpower to play them. I straight up hated them at first, because I like my games to make me think a little bit. Eventually though, I warmed up. GREAT party games.

It's fun to play with friends, but that's it for me, really.
Oh, and I usually sing or do drums.

They're just fun to play. Nothing more to it, really. Helps that the games have some great tracks to play, too.
It's far better if you play them with friends, though.

There is nothing like having a few drinks and playing these games with a group of friends. and the volume has got to be turned up to an ungodly level.

I've played Rock Band a few times with friends, but don't have it myself yet. That said, I can't wait to pick it up and start doing some drumming. I'm a guitarist in an actual rock band, but I love drumming and want to get more practice on it -- I know it's not the same, but it should help get my hand/foot coordination more on track.
