For some reason, I have a sudden rise of interest in MMORPGs even though I never cared much about them so far. So I was thinking about getting into WoW as soooooo many people told me about it.
Now the thing is, what is holding me from getting it is the monthly fee. I refuse to pay each month to play a game I already paid for.
BUT, a few days ago, someone here said there was a way to play for free once you've bought the game. My question is simple: is it legal?
Subsidiary question: is there a trial version or something? So that I can, as they say, try before I buy?

The trial version is very limited. If you have any friends that play, I would try playing on their account rather than do the trial, since playing the full game will give you a better indication of what you're getting into.

After the trial you got two ways to pay.
Credit Cards or time cards.
I pay with time cards. Its easy and only 30 bucks a pop.
Best way to keep playing Warcraft is to get a job. A steady income will keep you playing. Having to scrounge the money to keep playing is awful.

How much time does a time card give?

First time you play Warcraft you get one month free. So with the first time card you would get 3 months of play.
Every other time card after that will give you two months of play.

Also, if you pay cash, there's 3 different blocks of time you can pay for:
1 month- $14.99 3 months- $41.97 (or $13.99/month) 6 months- $77.94 (or $12.99/month)
I go the route of 6 months mainly because it is cheaper and I don't have to worry about paying nearly as much.
(edit/note: that's all in US dollars. It may be different depending on where you live.)

Well, technically, it should be a bit less in euros, though we Europeans seem to get ass-raped when it comes to video game prices. For example, after doing some research, I discovered that the European version of the PC port of Guitar Hero III was no less than 20 dollars more expensive than the American version (and what you get for that price is a port that lags on most computer unless you modify the files manually, and the controllers that come with it are the unsold X-Box 360 guitar controllers. I swear I'm not making that up).

Yes, but don't be suprised if you start losing data from you characters, in the form of levels, items, gold, etc. Answer to 2: Yes. Trail version on Blizzard's website you can download. Not as limited as you might think, but there is a level cap (I believe it's 20), and you can't join a guild, recieve/send mail, and other little things. If you do feel like trying it out, I invite you to join on my server. Look for the server Bleeding Hollow, I'm on the Alliance side under the name Arluss. (Edit: Scratch that, Im on a US server. Look for an Oceanic server near you. Go to www.wowrealmstatus.com for more information on the servers close to you. )

I think that even with the limitations, the trail version will be enough to see what the game is like. I'm surprised to see the free, unofficial servers are actually legal. it's good to know though. thank you for the answers and the tips, guys!

O...kaaaay so I'm trying to install the trial version provided by Blizzard's website, I create an account and download the TryWoW.exe file but when I launch it, it starts downloading, then it shows me the following message:
Note that I launched the file after closing FireFox, and when I trn it back on and go on the WoW website, I get this message:

Sorry man, I don't know what to tell you about that one.
If you have any friends who have the game, you could borrow their discs. Also, any game stores you have about usually sell the trail DVD for $1.99 USD.

Another thing about free servers is sometimes they'll do things like give you sixty levels for every one level you gain, just to get people to the highest level possible as soon as possible.
Kinda robs you of the experience of the game and learning your class, in my opinion.

Selective Startup:For Windows Vista users: Click Start and in the "Start Search" field type "msconfig" and hit Enter. In the General tab: 1. Choose Selective Startup 2. Disable (uncheck) Load startup items 3. Click OK and Reboot
Windows XP users: Click Start and select Run, then type "msconfig" and click OK. In the General tab: 1. Choose Selective Startup 2. Disable (uncheck) Load startup items 3. Click OK and Reboot
I don't know, it might help.

for the OP make sure you get an american copy of the game, i live in europe as well and played the european version of the game and it was quite frustrating, because you have to team with a lot of other players and there was quite a few that spoke really bad english or none at all which led to many deaths for groups. get an american copy like i did
