got to thinking, with Christmas coming up and all the Christmas specials that come up and the occasional Hanukkah and Kwanzaa special thrown in and with the Christmas special countdown got me thinking about an unusual holiday tradition of mine that is 5 years strong and still going. That tradition is at some point during the holiday season I like to sit down and watch my copy of SLC Punk.
This tradition started back during my Freshmore year of college. Right before winter break a friend of mine were discussing things in movies that really messed with our heads. Which for him was the scene in Full Metal Jacket when Pvt. Pyle kills Drill Sgt. Hartman and then offing himself which he said made it so he couldn't watch the rest of the film (which had me ragging on him for not having the stomach to watch the rest of the movie/told him how much of a great 2nd half he missed out on). Anyways he said that this messed with his head almost as much as Heroin Bob's death at the end of SLC Punk which I had yet to see despite knowing about the film for years. Despite him hating the ending he told me how much he loved the film up to that point.
So after his kind of mixed recommendation I was bored one day during winter break so I rented the film (and despite it was 2003 I rented it on VHS not knowing I'd get a DVD player for christmas that year) absolutely loved the film. A year later I was bored during winter break and in Blockbuster I saw SLC Punk on DVD so I'm like "I really liked this movie and I haven't seen it in a year, I guess I'll rent it. Plus with the DVD player I now have I can enjoy the special features".
Then in August of 2005 I broke my leg which resulted in surgery and 4 or 5 day hospital visit, a lot of follow up appointments, and another surgery to remove some screws, and a whole lot of PT. So that year I rented SLC Punk just to hear Heroin Bob scream "Thank God!!! These doctors can all kiss my ass" on hearing the news he was to be released from the hospital as kind of a my own personal rallying cry of my own freedom from constant medical treatment (although I still had a couple of months of PT to go, I could now walk without crutches/wheelchair/walker, etc)
By 2006 It became such a tradition I decided to just out and out buy a copy of the DVD since I was just going to be renting atleast once a year anyways so might as well buy it and eventually it'll pay for itself.
But anyways since then this movie has been a holiday time tradition for me, even though the only thing "Christmassy" about that movie is all the snow on the ground in Salt Lake City. So anyone else got any non-holiday movies that are holiday time traditions for you?
