Would the fan boys have been as up in arms over the announcement as they were with Keaton? If I remember correctly, most people were uneasy over the choice of Michael Keaton as Batman because he had been primarily seen as a comedic actor (e.g. "Night Shift", "Mr. Mom", "Johnny Dangerously", "Gung Ho", and "Beetlejuice"). Thus, fans were afraid that it was going to be a repeat of the campy Adam West TV series from the '60s.
By 1989, Val Kilmer (although perhaps not having as many films under his belt as Michael Keaton at that point) had already appeared in more action-oriented films like "Top Gun" and "Willow" than Michael Keaton. Joel Schumacher first thought that Kilmer could make a good Bruce Wayne/Batman when he saw him play Doc Holliday in "Tombstone". As the story goes, when he was first asked if he wanted to play Batman in a movie, Val Kilmer signed on without reading the script (he also apparently, didn't know that the franchise was going to take a different direction from the Tim Burton era to the Joel Schumacher era).

I don't think they would've been as up in arms. Of course, there are always people who complain about absolutely everything, but I think it would've been a decent choice. He played a good Wayne/Bats, even if it was a less than stellar flick.
I still love the Burton Batman movies though. Keaton was surprisingly great.

It dont think it would work as well as Keaton did. Even though physically it would prolly be better since Kilmer may not have had to wear 50 pounds of rubber...
(I just cant get across what Im trying to say right now, so sorry if that doesnt make sense to some.)

When it was announced years ago that Micheal Keaton was going to play Batman, my brother couldn't believe it since he had no muscles. You know who would have been a better Batman at the time, in his opinion? Joe Piscopo ... Yeah, I'll let that sink it a bit.

Actually, i would have liked to have seen keaton as the joker. After all, he did do a good job as beetlejuice who was essentially a demonic version of the joker.

Keaton was a weird choice but I grew up with the first Batman film and think he was the best.

I'm not a huge fan of the Burton movies but I think Keaton did a good job. I do think that Kilmer may have been a better Bruce Wayne, but in spite of his size, I think Keaton was a far more intimidating Batman.

In my opinion, Keaton is the best Batman/Bruce Wayne. He plays him like the shy and hidden person that Wayne should be and the stealthy character Batman should be. Actually, i would have liked to have seen keaton as the joker. After all, he did do a good job as beetlejuice who was essentially a demonic version of the joker.

Kilmer would have been a well-received choice before the movie came out. Afterward, the opinions probably would have been different because there is ZERO chance he would have been able to hold up against Nicholson.
I can't be alone in thinking Kilmer's Batman/Bruce was beyond awful. "Tell me, Doctor, do you like the sssircussss?" Ugh. I was rooting for Two-Face to shoot him point-blank in the face.

In a way, I could sort of understand where Tim Burton was going with Michael Keaton as Batman. Keaton does have this "boarding on the edge of insanity" vibe about his appearance (e.g. the arched eyebrows). Bruce Wayne is partially insane to begin with.
