So, to preface this, I have had SERIOUS issues with depression. But, for the past four years, nothing. Since I came home from the Army with a bad back and learned that my fiancee had been cheating on me the whole time, not so much as a drop of depression. And then, all of the sudden, the smallest thing gets me. My sister and brother-in-law gave me a Christmas gift of an Outback gift card with the catch. I have to use it on a date. Now, I haven't been on a date in two plus years, so I appreciated the thought. And now, I'm all depressed, thinking about where my life has wound up at. I don't really have a point, I guess I am just posting this to get it off of my chest.

I've been dealing with depression for the past year or so, did you ever take any meds for it? Maybe it might be worth getting checked by the doc again. Just try and keep your mind busy man to avoid thinking and allowing depression to creep in and take over. And f*** a date, that will come in due time, you can't go out looking for that, let it come to you. Your health should come first and foremost brother, get that right then you got the rest of your life to date.

I know how it is, man. Depression is a very bad thing to have hanging over you, and it's impossible to predict what will hit you hardest.

Yeah, when I left the Army, the doctor put me on Prozac to help ease my transition back into civilian life. I took that for about two months and then just stopped taking them. I have set up an appointment to go to the doctor's office on Tuesday to maybe start taking them again. I appreciate the kinds words, brother.

Not having a date isn't the end of the world. I look good and have plenty of date options, just am too apathetic to give them the time of day. Not saying that's a good thing and I probably suffer from depression as well (or at least bipolar since I go from bizarre swings of feeling like a loser to feeling better than anybody), but it's not worth killing yourself over or anything. I've never tried Prozac but maybe that'd be good for you.

I've been on Prozac but more recently started taking various other drugs to help me with my depression and also my OCD. I guess for it helps to get out of the house and just go somewhere else. Maybe taking a walk or something. Although, it might be a little tougher since its cold out. But also just try doing things you enjoy doing, whatever they may be to help get your mind off things.

Is there really anyway to know if you have depression or not without going to a doctor or anything?

Methinks giving paople Prozac as if it's a candy is a terrible terrible trend that may have as well ruined many patients.
Granted, I don't know your backstory, and I'm no doctor, so the call may have been a good one, but giving Prozac to "help the transition" from a lifestyle to another sounds of cop-out/easy solution to me.
Anyway, not having a date isn't great, but it's not the end of the world either... Plenty of girls out there, it's only a matter of hunting for one

I should clarify on why I started taking them. It wasn't leaving the Army that got me; I had no intention on taking those pills. I started taking them after I discovered that Alyssa, my fiancee at the time, was cheating on me pretty much as soon as I left for Basic. I understand that not going on a date isn't a big deal. It doesn't bother me. I'm saying that my life and it's direction in general are what's getting me down.

Talk to someone like a therapist. When my marriage fell apart, I was talking to a therapist to try to figure out what was wrong with me and why my wife didn't want me anymore (found out she was also cheating). Through months of counseling, I realized that there was nothing wrong with me. I had a bad hand dealt to me, but that I could get through it. In short, I left my wife (which was indescribably hard because we have a son and there was a huge burden of guilt as his father), I went back to college after five years (30 yrs old and I'm a junior) and in the process, made some new friends.
In summary, life is a lot better now. I've got a black book of chicks phone numbers, I'm having fun with my friends when I can, and I have my son half the week every week.
So you can overcome your depression. Whether you use meds, or therapy, or both - you can improve your life. It doesn't happen overnight, but with time, you can be happy with your life again.

Especially the part about the direction (or lack of) your life seems to have taken. I however maintain that doctors should stop prescribing Prozac & co as if it is bubble-gum. I second the idea you should see a therapist. That way you could try to actually solve your issues, instead of drowning them in a chemical-enhanced mood. Either way, good luck!

Lexapro > Prozac. It's a more specialized version of prozac, basically - it doesn't have all the horrible side effects prozac does.
Talk to your doc about that.

Suddenly stopping taking Prozac is very dangerous because of the drastic effect it can have on your body's chemistry. The makers were getting sued in the 80's and 90's because mainly housewives were killing themselves. They were taking their "happy pill" feeling better, loosing weight, and once they got to where they wanted, they would just stop taking it without waning off of it. It would cause severe feelings of suicide and they killed themselves. Don't ever just stop taking meds like that without asking a doctor. We were talking about this exact same thing in Pharmacy Tech class one night.
On topic tho, depression sucks. Hope things get better for you man!
