I own that book too. Thing is wearing a helmet cuz Wolverine scratched his face all up when the FF were doing battle with the 'Secret Defenders' who were trying to turn Johnny over to the authorities after he went nova in a battle with Lyja,Paibok, and Devos and burnt the ESU campus. The FF got teleported to the moon by the Watcher who made them do battle with Doom who had absorbed Aron the Rogue Watcher's power. Thing finds the helmet on a display of the FF and begins to wear it to protect his weakened face. Plus Johnny is wearing a jacket because apparently from Reed's design it 'focuses his flame' better or some such.
My head- full of useless nerdery.
The best cover enhancement ever was I think a malibu comics issue where it was a 'laser blasted' cover that had a dude's bloody upper torso with a hole shot in it, and the hole goes all the way through the comic at the expense of the interior art having to be placed around said hole.

Yeah, I got it for 50 cents myself.
I totally thought it would be worth soooo much 'cause it was the first issue.

Dont forget Holograms, Die Cut, and i think Image had one that invited readers to "rub the blood" and here it is: Umm...what up with Wannabe-Wolvie and Copycat-Cable there?

Yeah, Image wasn't all that great. Sure, it had Jim Lee, and I liked WildCATS...but that's it. The rest of Image was just horribly lame.

Oh shit, I totally forgot about The Maxx, and the fact that it was Image.
Yeah, Maxx was awesome.

I actually really liked the first couple Shadowhawk series, and Savage Dragon has always been solid entertainment for your funny book dollar.

I will say this - like many Rob concepts, Bloodstrike was unique and excellent *in concept* - execution was a little less so.
For those that didn't read it, Bloodstrike was a government team of assassins. But...they were also zombies. They would be revived and sent out on missions and if they were killed (which they were, often), the government just picked up the pieces, put them back together and brought them back to life.
It really was a neat idea, like many other Liefeld ideas. Hell, Youngblood was a great concept too - super heroes who were more interested in their licensing rights than fighting bad guys. Even Supreme - what happens when Superman starts thinking he really is God? They just needed a writer that could take those ideas and put them into something that really worked.

I'll say this for Image: they gave us Wildstorm, which gave us Astro City. I'm willing to forgive them just about anything for AC. I love that damn series. Oh, and here's my 90s comic cover contributions: First thing I thought of... Second thing I thought of... Third thing I thought of...

There are a few things about 90s comics that stand out for me (for bad reasons):
1. Cover mania. Any #1s got multiple covers, some comics had special die-cut covers, some got holograms, and so on and so on. It got really ridiculous. Marvel was really bad for this.
2. The Dark Knight Returns effect - turning as many comics into "grim and gritty" as possible.
3. The mega-armored hero. Seemed like there were Cable types all over the place.
4. The Jim Lee Craze where almost every artist seemed like they were copying Jim Lee's style.
5. The Image Craze - where many comics tried to turn their comics into Image clones.

It wouldn't have been so bad if it was just contained to #1 issues. But then they started doing it with anniversary issues, rounded-off number issues (#50, #100, #200, etc), then special events, then just about anything for any reason ("Special Collector's Issue! We have no idea why, but let's just go with it being our seventh issue, so we're slapping chromium on it!")

Sometimes don't forget the same comic would have different versions of a special cover - one would be Spidey swinging (OH WOW!!) in a hologram on a red cover and there's the nasty Green Goblin (or whoever) looking menacing on his hologram on his green one. These special covers would jack up the price nicely (for them, not us unfortunately).
I remember people buying multiple copies - one for reading and one for storing in the all-mighty "Mylar".
A guy who worked at a comic book store I used to go to bought 1500$ worth of Tales Of The Dark Knight issue #1 - all the colors - because he was convinced they'd be worth something today.
The absolute worst was the mania over "The Death Of Superman". It sold out instantly and I remember it being put on sale the same day "on the wall" for 100$ and more.
