For me it has to be Kings of Leon.
I never even heard of them before this year, but hearing sex on fire and use somebody on the radio has drilled them into my head. I really dig them atm.

I knew of KOL's awesomeness since 2005.
And if Eddie Vedder thought they were awesome enough to open for them two years ago, then that makes them even more awesome.

Sex on Fire got me into Kings of Leon for like a week. But then it got overplayed to such an insane degree that I couldn't stand his voice anymore.
Globally, I think Oracular Spectacular by MGMT is pretty underrated, in Australia the standout is clearly The Presets

I now HATE Kings Of Leon due to them being overplayed into oblivion, overrated Indie in my opinion, but I guess I'm in the minority.
This is their year though, unfortunately.

I quite like Kings of Leon myself. Good stuff.
My personal standouts:
Amanda Palmer The Fall of Troy Metallica Panic at the Disco Fall Out Boy Loma Prieta Jaguar Love Dance Gavin Dance Dir en grey Kanye West The Killers One Day As a Lion Protest the Hero Rise Against Underoath These Arms Are Snakes Fear Before Weezer
All bands that have released some pretty stellar stuff this year. It's been an awesome one for music.

Kings of Leon were mine last year along with Bloc Party and CSS. I much prefer "Because of the Times" to "Only By The Night". The second half of their new album all sounds really similar whereas last years album had a lot of standout tracks. This year it's Bloc Party again for me. I absolutely love "Intimacy", there isn't a track on it I'd change. My favourite track on it is Zepherus and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone. My newcomer of the year is The Cool Kids. I thought "The Bake Sale" was f***ing awesome and became a big part of the soundtrack to my summer. N.E.R.D disappointed me however.

Local H had my favorite album of the year with "12 Angry Months" so I'll say them. Reggie And The Full Effect,Relient K,and Norma Jean also released good albums this year.

Some bands who I feel put out awesome music in 2008: Street Dogs, Mark Lind and the Unloved, The Briggs, and Metallica. Notable mentions for the Dropkick Murphys and Bad Religion who rereleased their albums from '07 The Meanest of Times and New Maps of Hell respectively with bonus tracks on them.

I wanted to get into Norma Jean's new album...but I just wasn't feeling it for some reason. It had high points, but I felt it really wasn't as good as anything else they've done. I need to give it another chance at some point.

I don't think you can blame KOL for being overplayed, lol, it's the radio stations and whatever that overplay a band. Kings of Leon are my standout band of 2008 though,
Glasvegas a close second. I know they been around for a few years, and Daddys Gone was voted the indie song of 2006 by NME, but the album this year was fantastic and lived up to the hype.
discovering a lot of older bands and musicians such as Rodriquez and Joanna Newsom made this a fairly decent year.

I agree about Metallica. There new album was a huge improvement from St. Anger. They really turned it around to the right direction with Death Magnetic. They standout this year because of it, that and I think it also because I so them live also. So they got more in my head.
