I'm not gonna lie, I've never read "The Spirit" comics, but before this even hit theaters the one thing that really bugged me is that it was being advertised as "Frank Miller's The Spirit" whereas I've always, ALWAYS known it as "Will Eisner's The Spirit." Never was it just "The Spirit" to me, it was "Will Eisner's The Spirit" and the fact that he isn't getting any promotional credit really bugged me. This is what bugged me the most, coupled with Miller just BLANKETING the damn movie in his SIN CITY style. That's NOT what the Spirit is supposed to resemble, not what the character is supposed to be about. Eisner's Spirit is about as far from SIN CITY as you can get. I think this film MAY have done better if it were presented as INTENTIONALLY campy, and directed in a style more reminiscent of the Alec Baldwin SHADOW movie, or even Beatty's DICK TRACY. Hell TRACY was campy and silly as all hell, but it's almost ICONIC today. In fact, The Spirit is much, MUCH more akin to Dick Tracy in it's tone and regard for women, than it is to SIN CITY. Frank Darabont would have hit a HOME RUN with this.

It was marketed like Sin City Part 2, but it was total camp... which threw me off. Ah well, at least I got to see Scarlett for a few hours on Christmas Morning.

I dunno. I really thought Frank was a great writer in the 80's. I not only loved Dark Knight and Year One but man I loved Ronin and all the Daredevil stuff. It's scary how much he's lost his mind over the years. I never thought he'd draw such universal hate from folks. He easily was among the most talented men of the past few decades. Not only his writing, but his art was more then solid and he had a wonderful eye for layouts. He's a master storyteller. However, somewhere along the way he got lost, but keeps chugging on based largely on his reputation. I'm not going to fault him for it, because every field has people like this. As for the universal hate, I think its either only based on recent stuff or people just want to be trendy. Looking at his entire body of work its impossible not to call the man legendary. But man does he hate him some ladies sometimes. He CAN be a good artist, when he has the right inker. I liked his work on the original Wolverine mini-series. And his Daredevil original run was good. It's like he lacks any discipline nowadays. I know it started with Sin City. Three panels of black with a sloppily-drawn single hooker jumping off a roof is a waste of my comic-book money.

It didn't make a lot of money but neither is this one.

I wonder what will be the next oldie tyme Radio Series, Comic Book, or Comic Strip that will re-imaged into the new millenium green screen style?
Prince Valiant maybe? Rex Morgan, M.D.? Is the Green Hornet movie still in the works?

Frank Darabont would have hit a HOME RUN with this. Wow. How RIGHT I was. I just went with a friend to go see this last night (her other friend bailed, and I was curious enough about it to give it a fighting chance) and I was pretty much bang on with my assessment. This film is a piss poor fit for Frank Miller's SIN CITY style. Everything, to me, would have played a LOT better had it been done in realistic, normal lighting, and given more of a DICK TRACY bent to it. But I will say that I do think that people are being unfair to THE SPIRIT. It's far from the WORST movie I've seen this year, and I thought that Sam Jackson was hilarious in this. THE SPIRIT is a light, campy, and downright silly movie, but in my eyes, it was a FUN movie. More Batman TV series than DARK KNIGHT.....it never takes itself more seriously than the average newspaper funnypages strip would. Am I upset at how Miller desecrated Will Eisner's creation? Yes. Yes I am. I really wish Frank Darabont or Sam Mendes would have done a slam bang job with this. It breaks my heart to see Miller turn this into SIN CITY 1.5, and I really, really hate the look of this film. But looking past that, and forgetting for a moment the anger I hold towards Miller for that....this IS a fun movie, and in time will be one of those cult classics that everyone talks about in joking tones. It will be revered for the camp factor that everyone is slagging it for now, mark my words. All in all...not the worst, but not what I would have liked in a SPIRIT film, either. Still, I had fun with it, despite all that, so I give it **1/2.
