So I've gotten kinda tired being chained to the wall with my laptop whenever I want to get on the net. So I'm thinking about getting a wireless router, but I'm pretty much illiterate when it comes to computers. I have Cox high speed internet and I was wondering what kind of router should I buy? Are they easy to hook up? Any other tips I should know? Thanks in advance.

I too, was clueless about wireless internet.
I bought a random D-link Router for 30$ last year and within an hour I had my PC, my wife's work Laptop and my Wii all connected to the Internet.
Wireless Routers almost always come with a program that makes setting it up no harder than clicking a couple buttons.
Just don't forget to turn on some security! You don't want every tool with a wireless modem DL'ing gigs of porn off your connection. Especially if you have Capped Internet Bandwidth.

Or be a pal, and don't put a password on it. Nothing frustrates me more than going out on the road to a friend's house, picking up 3 faint internet signals and not being able to use any of them. They're not going to be able to use that much of your connection unless they were right there in your house.

I got a Linksys Wireless N Router. There are different speeds of routers. N is the fastest. G is the one under it though if you wanna go cheaper. But the model number on mine was WRT160N. It's pretty good and hasn't messed up on me. It's about $60 now. It's easy to set up.

Personally, I got a D Link router for around forty bucks that works great. And as others have suggested, set up security on it.

They're not going to be able to use that much of your connection unless they were right there in your house. If he lives in any sort of arrangement where other people are going to get his signal, he should be protecting it. There's plenty of free wireless out there. If a person is paying for it and don't want people using their bandwidth (and given Comcast and AT&T's rather fascist fine print in the UEA, who would?), being a pal has nothing to do with it. He's footing the bill for a service, he has the discretion on who gets in and out.

I never understood why I should pay for a service only to have everyone else use it for free, taking up my bandwidth. Just because the signal is weak doesn't mean that you aren't taking up bandwidth that I have to pay for.

It's not like you have much use for it after you've left. And besides changing the password isn't that hard. Unless you're stupid and using the same password for your emails and such
