Damn C.C. now all I'm going to hear on sports radio is Yankees talk. I'm still not over the summer where that's all they do talk about.

CC Sabathia signs for $160million. Congratulations, Yankees, on making me feel very, very, VERY much better about the Alfonso Soriano contract.

mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081210&content_id=3710202&vkey=news_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cwsOzzie Guillen & Joey Cora will be in Miami working with potential starting 3B Josh Fields on his defense. Ozzie was also quoted as saying that he's leaning towards Chris Getz as his starting 2B. Clayton Richard may have worked his way into the rotation, but with the trade of Boone Logan to Atlanta, he's at the very least locked up a bullpen spot. When asked about Dayan: "Viciedo has got to lose some weight," said Guillen, who expressed these sentiments to Jaime Torres, Viciedo's agent, along with the team's excitement to have Viciedo aboard during a talk at the Bellagio on Monday. "He's got to come in shape. "Spring Training is not for getting yourself in shape. Spring Training is to prepare yourself for the season and I want all my players, I don't care who it is, they make sure they show up in shape." (Ed. Note: That's funny, considering that's why they have Spring Training to begin with!) Jerry Owens is being penciled in as the starting CF for 2009, although it could be a platoon situation. (Oh no, not this crap again...JUST PUT ANDERSON IN ALREADY! They're turning poor Brian into Joe Borchard.) See? Not everything surrounding the Winter Meetings is in a hotel lobby.

Rangers president Nolan Ryan would like to add either Randy Johnson or Ben Sheets to his team's rotation.
Poor Nolan, so young, so full of hope. He has to be hit with the reality that his owner is a cheapskate.

How much would it cost to purchase the Rangers?

Wow, 7 years for a pitcher who's pushing 300 lbs. and is a risk to break down by year four. On top of that, he can opt out after three seasons. If he stinks, he can keep earning a massive paycheck. If he exceeds expectations, he can opt out and hold NY ransom for a pay raise. That's quite the deal for him.
I think Sabathia is overrated and won't be as dominant as last year (in a weak NL Central), but he'll still be a very good SP for at least three seasons. Probably not as good as Wang, though.

Agreed. Wang is definitely the better of the two IMO. If I'm a Yankee fan, I'm also hoping that Girardi goes back and watches how Sabathia ended 2007 and 2008 and realizes you can't put 230 IP on this guy before October. If he keeps taking on the work load that he's seen these past few seasons, he'll be burnt out in no time. No more of this 125-130 pitch count stuff.
Then again, as a Red Sox fan, I'm hopeful Girardi hasn't learned a thing ;D

And now Jon Heyman is reporting that the Yankees are close to signing Lowe for 4 years, $68-72M. That's just ridiculous. $17-18M per year for a 36 year old pitcher who achieved success in the NL West and now has a terrible defensive middle IF behind him. This will end nicely And the Braves seem to have finally offered Burnett a guaranteed 5th year, with the contract totaling $80M.

For the Yanks middle IF, they should make Cody Ransom the new starting 2B. That'll solve half the problem.

Sorry I've been away all day, but I figure I'll throw in my two cents regarding the news of the day.
Seven years for a pitcher who is already pushing three bills. And it's not like Sabathia is going to lose weight over the next few years. And as was already pointed out, Sabathia can opt out in three years and hold a gun to the Yankees heads for even more money. It's just all-around an ugly acquisition. The front office of the Yankees believe that this is a move to get them into the playoffs and over the top, but Sabathia has a documented history of poor performances in the postseason. Also, Sabathia is only 2-4 against the Red Sox.
At $23 million a season, Sabathia is now the richest pitcher in baseball history. But for the Yankees, will they be willing to pay $23 million in 2012, when Sabathia, presumably around 315 lbs. at that point, is sweating out another 4 inning start in mid-July in the Bronx.
And just when you thought it couldn't get any more hilariously awful, the Yankees are rumored to be close to signing Derek Lowe to a four-year, $66 million contract. That's over sixteen million a season for DEREK LOWE. Yes, the same Derek Lowe who peaked in 2005. The same Derek Lowe who can only be successful if he has a good infield defense behind him. And let's be honest, the Yankees don't exactly have Gold Glovers at every infield position.
But now that Sabathia is off the market, and the Yankees have ruled out any interest in Mark Teixeira, the ball is in Boston's court to sign Tex to a good contract and have him locked up for the better part of the next decade.

Cody Ransom and his fluke .651 slugging% over 43 ABs in 2008... starting for the $200M New York Yankees. That would be worth a laugh I'm surprising Sheets isn't getting more attention. He had a healthy 2008 and is probably only going to get a 2-year deal. I wonder why someone isn't throwing 2 years, $30-32M at him. But now that Sabathia is off the market, and the Yankees have ruled out any interest in Mark Teixeira, the ball is in Boston's court to sign Tex to a good contract and have him locked up for the better part of the next decade. If anyone on the market is deserving of a 7-10 year contract at over $20M per year, it's Teixeira. He's the most likely player to actually maintain solid numbers for the duration of a contract.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. Those who have the $$ spend it, those who don't whine about it. Hey, they can spend all the money they want. They'll be the ones crying when they still can't win a title with the league's highest payroll. Been that way for 8 years running ;D

That's just ridiculous. $17-18M per year for a 36 year old pitcher who achieved success in the NL West and now has a terrible defensive middle IF behind him. This will end nicely . I don't get the logic. Chien-Ming Wang is the best sinkerball pitcher in the game today next to Brandon Webb & Dan Haren and he doesn't seem to have a problem putting up a sub-3.8 ERA in the AL East and averaging 15 wins the past four seasons even with a 'terrible defensive middle IF behind him.' Secondly, I had no idea that one below-average season from a 25-year old second baseman constitutes him as a terrible infielder. I guess everyone can't be The Mighty Dustin Pedroia; The measuring stick to which all 2nd basemen will be judged. I mean, if you're going to hate on Jeter and Cano, at least put some logic behind it. Still, I'd rather see the Yanks trade for Jake Peavy. Even if he bombed in the Bronx, he's still nine years younger than Lowe. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. Those who have the $$ spend it, those who don't whine about it. Co-signed.

The Rangers have reportedly asked the Tigers about Gary Sheffield, who is owed $14 million in the final year of his deal.
