A rival GM says the Cardinals have offered Rick Ankiel and a prospect to the Mariners for J.J. Putz, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

Along with the Red Sox, the Mets and Tigers are reportedly on John Smoltz's list of possible destinations if he leaves Atlanta.

Secondly, I had no idea that one below-average season from a 25-year old second baseman constitutes him as a terrible infielder. I guess everyone can't be The Mighty Dustin Pedroia; The measuring stick to which all 2nd basemen will be judged. I mean, if you're going to hate on Jeter and Cano, at least put some logic behind it. One below-average defensive season from Cano? If you look at UZR, he's had one above-average defensive season in his career. 2005: -18.4 (Worst in MLB among 2B) 2006: -1.6 2007: 8.1 2008: -7.3 (Second worst among 2B) Who's to say his 2007 defensive season wasn't an anomaly? Throw in Jeter's obvious defensive woes, and you have the makings of a terrible defensive middle IF. The stats back me up on this. Hell, Wang would probably be better off without them. Who knows what he'd be capable of if he had a better group playing behind him. Hey, Boston's not exactly stingy. Never said they weren't. But the gap between the Yankees and everyone else is insane. I'm not upset they want to spend money, never said I was, never have been. They have it, they can use it however they wish. Not their fault there's no salary cap in baseball. But it's clear that throwing excessive amounts of money hasn't done them any good since 2001. Yet the team sticks with the money-spending mentality. You'd think that after seeing it fail them in their bid to win a title in recent history, that they'd try a different route. But alas, all this will probably fall on deaf ears just because of who I root for

Apparently the Mark Texieria race is coming down to 2 teams, the Nationals and Orioles. The Nationals have offered Tex a 10 year/$200 million contract. The Orioles countered with a 9 year/$180 million contract.

I'd imagine the Nats are in this just to be relevant. I hope Tex doesn't mind being on a losing team for the rest of his career.

Tex bringing pain to the Mets pitching staff is far preferable to bringing the pain to the Yankees pitching staff as an Oriole.

And we are actually.......better.........then the Nationals. Yes, it's hard for me to ever say we are better then anybody. Oh, and apparently the Rangers are interested in trading for Gary Sheffield. Yes, we won't even throw out an offer to re-sign our All-Star OF/DH Milton Bradley, but we'll trade for overpaid, over the hill dumbass Shef?

So I got no problem with what the Yankees are doing

Did they also use to run the Knicks? Maybe they sign both guys, have a camera crew follow them around, and turn it into a weekly in-season show. Throw in cameos by Carl Everett and you have a formula for success. Hey, we're only 10 months away from another Red Sox/Angels ALDS match-up. Can't wait! ;D

From MLBtraderumors.com:
3:14pm(CST): Rosenthal says the Yankees' talks with Lowe are progressing, but reports that they're close are overblown. He adds that the Yanks are also in active discussions with A.J. Burnett, and, surprisingly, Andy Pettitte.

I reckon the Yankees would rather bring back Andy than sign Burnett who's arm could fall off at any moment.

Pettite for 1 year wouldn't be too bad. Maybe as a 4th/5th starter. They would probably be better off adding a couple more starters so Joba can work out of the pen. Sign Sheets for 2 years, Pettite for 1, giving you Wang/Sabathia/Sheets/Pettite/Hughes, and push Joba into the setup role where he flourished.

This is why I hate the Yankees.
10:57pm: Heyman says the Yankees' topped the Braves offer for Burnett by a few million dollars. He says the Yanks apparently will attempt to sign all three top free agent starters - C.C. Sabathia, Derek Lowe, and Burnett.
And before anyone says "they have the resources to do it so they should," any success (which we all know is questionable) is based on them being richer, not better...and totally destroys anything close to competitive balance in MLB.
Salary cap now, please.

No way there's a salary cap in the near future. The players would go on strike in a heartbeat.
(Not saying there shouldn't be one, but I just don't see it happening)

Yankees have not won a world series in this decade despite spending hundreds of millions on payroll. Just because you spend money, does not mean you'll win a ring.

The Yankees can go ahead and sign AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe. I can't for the life of me understand why either pitcher is considered to be "elite". Lowe relies on infield defense and Burnett is plagued with injuries.
But hey, whatever makes the Yankees more of a hilarious failure is fine by me.

I would not be surprised if the ESPN 2 special today will be them talking about CC Sabathia for 58 minutes.
