The Cubs have made trade inquiries about Chone Figgins, according to the Los Angeles Times. I could live with Chone Figgins in Center Field. Hasn't played out there in a couple years, but if the reanimated corpse of Jim Edmonds could get propped up out there, then I guess our bar is pretty low.

Apparently the Yanks just upped their offer to counteract the Braves as I just read a report saying the Braves offered him 5 years $80m. I'd rather have Sheets anyway, though we probably couldn't get him either... Randy Wolf? I actually kind of like him, but that's a pretty big drop. And that Mets trade sucks.

Rosenthal says the Yanks are offering $91MM over five years for Burnett Overkill of the highest magnitude. Breakdown of the Putz deal: Mets get:RP J.J Putz RP Sean Green OF Jeremy Reed Indians get:IF Luis Valbuena RP Joe Smith Mariners get:RP Aaron Heilman OF Endy Chavez 1B Mike Carp RF Franklin Gutierrez P Maikel Cleto* OF Ezequiel Carrera* P Jason Vargas* *minor leaguer In total, the Mets gave up 7 (SEVEN!) players in this deal. Out of all that junk, you'd think at least two of those prospects would pan out for the Mariners. So, I guess that's a plus for them. As a Marlin fan I can tell you Vargas might as well switch positions. He has no control, but damnit he can hit kind of

SO glad they made that trade. I've ALWAYS hated Franklyn Gutierrez. The guy sucked at EVERYTHING but defense. So, all Cleveland factored in the trade was Gutierrez for Joe Smith and Luis Valbuena. I'll have to do some research on the later, but I do think Smith will make a good Tom Mastny replacement.

The Brewers have apparently called the Rangers about Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla.
While the Dodgers and Mets have inquired about just Millwood.

If the Brewers don't acquire some decent starting pitching, all the overweight offense they can muster won't be good enough. Here's to healthy compet... Sorry. But Padilla and Millwood? Millwood could be a Paul Byrd-type inning eater in the NLC, but c'mon. Do they think they can replace the top two in their rotation like that.

sad to see Putz leave, but I really think he's done all he can in Seattle(lately, some players may hit the cusp on greatness, but then decline, quickly. Probably the worst player development in baseball). Hopefully we can start rebuilding with some young guys, instead of making stupid gambles like in the past(Berdard, Sexson).

Is Putz going to be happy being a set-up guy? What a waste... Omar has talked to him already and he's ok with it.

Looking back last year everybody said the Bedard move was a move that would put them over a top and that with a rotation of with Felix,Bedard,Silva at the front would allow them to compete with the Angels. Nobody knew that Bedard would get to Seattle and hate everything about the team.

I could have told you about Bedard. The guy hates the media so he tries to say as little as possible when he talks to them. He doesn't watch film, he doesn't workout seriously.
It will probably go down as one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history. It was that bad.
And it looks like Tex is going to Boston, b/c they really need him right? They haven't won a world series in 2 out of the last 4 years right?

The only reason the Tigers would even want Smoltz is because they traded him 20 years ago when he was just a farmhand. That's all they need is another pitcher that can't make 25-30 starts a year. -If he comes in shape, the White Sox are interested in bringing back Freddy Garcia, for a reunion with Ozzie Guillen. Excuse me while I watch a promising 2009 fly under the radar, out the window and crash-land into the sidewalk. I don't care if Freddie is Ozzie's second cousin, I say NO NO NO.

Yankees have traded Melky Cabrera for Mike Cameron from the Brewers. New report says that the deal isn't done because the Brewers want a 2nd player.

And at least Aaron Heilman isn't coming here.

Imagine if Heilman pulls a Kazmir and becomes the Mariners top reliever.

The deal is not completely dead. Just because it didn't happen at the winter meetings doesn't mean it will never happen. I heard rumors yesterday that Towers is willing to possibly start with Peavy next season, then deal if things aren't going well. (Same thing I heard about Smoltz. Peter Gammons said it wouldn't be the worst thing for John to wait until May to pick a team; it should help him heal.)
The main hinge is the Cubs aren't going to let Jason Marquis go cheap. For once, they're showing hesitation. Meanwhile, they're looking at Randy Johnson.
Look at what Kenny Williams does. He hasn't really done anything during the Winter Meetings, but it doesn't mean the Sox are staying where they are. In the past few years in the month of January, he's made some deals that really changed the face of the team. 2004, he signed some young unknown from Colorado named Juan Uribe. 2006, he traded Freddy Garcia for Jim Thome. 2007, Brandon McCarthy for John Danks. Last year, Chris Young for Carlos Quentin. This year, depending on if Teixeira signs anywhere else but Anaheim, Paul Konerko could be part of a package deal to the Angels. All this talk about Jermaine Dye being "all but traded", and he's still here. Why rush if you can't get the right deal that works out for both teams? That's what Kenny does. He doesn't try to screw anybody. He's seen Quentin play because he's Stanford alumni and seen a lot of his games as a college player. I didn't want to see Chris Young go, but this worked out.
One thing I can't figure out is why people think the Cubs need to build a team "meant to go deep into October". How can you get there today? You can't. Let's get from point A to point B first; let's get to July before you start worrying if you need another arm or another utility player for the NLCS.
(I know I mixed my Cubs and White Sox talk, but you knew that didn't you.)

Results of the Rule 5 draftI actually remember watching Reegie Corona play for the Staten Island Yankees a few years ago. Guy has a good future ahead of him.
