Watching CBS' intro made me realize how awfully difficult it is to take Pat O'Brien seriously anymore after hearing his nasty, drunk-dial rantings.
This was in my estimation, still the greatest World Series ever (at least in my lifetime). I was utterly appalled when ESPN on their "Who's No. 1" show, named the 1986 Series (Mets/Red Sox) to be the best ever, with if I remember correctly, the 2001 Series (D'Backs/Yankees) second. The '91 Series between the Twins and Braves came in fourth (only behind the 1975 Series between the Reds and Red Sox). Here's the full list by the way:
The Best World Series:
I honestly believe that ESPN was purely showing their prototypical northeastern bias by listing anything involving the Mets or Yankees in the top two. The '91 Series had a lot of moments that immediately standout:
*Two teams that had been in last place the year earlier, wind up making it to the World Series.
*Five of the seven games were decided by the final at-bat (and by one run).
*Three of the games went into extra innings (including Game 7).
*Kent Hrbek (the Twins' first baseman) practically throwing Ron Gant off the base and still getting an out in Game 2.
*Lonnie Smith violently bowling over Brian Harper at home plate in Game 4.
*Also in Game 4, Mark Lemke of the Braves narrowly escaping Brian Harper's tag at home to win the game for Atlanta.
*Kirby Puckett nearly hitting for the cycle (he needed a double) in Game 6, which of course, ended with his epic home run ("And we'll see you tomorrow night!").
*Lonnie Smith's hesitant base running in Game 7 likely costing the Braves a shot at the World Title.
*Jack Morris putting on one of the greatest clutch/big game performances of all time, with his ten inning shutout in Game 7.
