You need iTunes for starters. To my knowledge, you cant put music on it any other way. When you plug your iPod in, it will show up in the menu on the left side of iTunes. Basically, just click and drag songs into the iPod icon.
Hope that helps a bit.

Either use the iTunes Store or find your CD's, put them into your computer, and put the music in that way.

You pay for them($1 a song), but you can import any music files already on your computer to Itunes.

Also, just know you can only sync your ipod to one computer/itunes at one time. So if your friend has a bunch of music in their itunes, you can't just hook up yours and add their music to yours - it'll erase the music from your itunes. A lot of people I know don't know that so I figured I'd chime in and let you know

One you're finished searching for your music don't forget to type "wrestlecrap" in the search bar so you can enjoy the random ramblings of RD and Blade (cheap plug).

How? It's probably easy and I have no idea how to do it.

when you have your ipod plugged in, and you're looking at your info about it(its name, how much room is left, etc), there should be a check box saying "manually manage music". If its checked, you're pod won't sync automatically.
