I remember they had a good match with the Bodydonnas... the infamous Cloudy debut, I thought the New Rockers were actually gonna win, Marty friggin Jannety powerbombed Skip I think it was off the top rope, wasn the craziest move I ever saw at that point. Ends with Cloudy kissing Leif, and him being pinned by a rollup. That was on the Free-For-All before King of the Ring '96. And two weeks later, Michaels (the WWF champion) wrestled Jannetty on Raw in another outstanding match between the former partners. They could have been a serious heel team, no doubt, if they hadn't been forced to dance around like idiots. Jannetty with a chip on his shoulder about Shawn's success was perfectly good fodder for a heel run. But the gimmick just became nonsensical. I remember articles in WWF Magazine around that time where Jannetty and Cassidy supposedly were "into" the Monkees and the Patridge Family -- that kind of rock. They were supposed to be so clueless they didn't know what decade it was. Lame.

I loved how they were stuck in the past

A WWF world tour tape I have has them getting squashed by Ahmed Johnson and a 640 lbs. Yokozuna. I agree that there was no way the gimmick was going to get over, it was a satire of the original Rockers.

I liked them, two good wrestlers, the thing is they were presented as 70s hippie jokes as their characters, but they were great energetic wrestlers though.

Sad thing is, as cheesy as the gimmick was (and I marked for them as I was stuck in the 70's myself at the time), it was still better than that of the Godwinns and the Bodydonnas, who they repeatedly lost to every week.

One story goes, that they were supposed to be a legitimate throwback to the original team, with promos and matches similar to the original Rockers. But Shawn Michaels didn't want his old team getting over without him, so he lobbied to have them turned from serious face contenders into comedy heel jobbers. Marty wasn't pleased, but agreed to do it to help Snow get his foot in the door in the big time. That is Correct.
