With the quarter century anniversary of Wrestlemania fast approaching, I think its fitting that we have this thread. As we all know, Wrestlemania is WWE's flagship program, careers have ended and have been made. The show has provided moments that will last a lifetime. Witnessing it live(I have twice) is everything the commentators and wrestlers say it is. Many legends as well as current and future Hall of Famers contributed to this extravaganza. However, only one man can be refered to as Mr. Wrestlemania. I would make a poll, but there are so many names that have competed at the event, there's no way I can make it without running out of space. So here's my list of candidates who deserve the title.
Hulk Hogan - Competing at 11 Wrestlemanias and headling 9 of them, he is no stranger to the event. His match against Andre The Giant at Wrestlemania III in front of a packed Pontiac Silverdome really gave a feel of what the Wrestlemania should be - 2 big names headlining the event in a huge stadium. He also had memorable matches at the event against Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Ultimate Warrior, and The Rock.
Randy "Macho Man" Savage - Some say he had the best moments at the event, and I can see why. His match against Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania III made PWI magazine's match of the year, he won the vacant WWF championship at Wrestlemania IV, he clashed with fellow Mega Power, Hulk Hogan, he fought Ultimate Warrior in a hard hitting bout at VII, and the aftermath really added on to it, as well as his classic match against Ric Flair at Wrestlemania VIII. This man was based on emotion, and he really brought it to the event.
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 13 is what made his career against WWE Hall of Famer Bret "The Hitman" Hart. The fact that he would'nt give up showed what a tough man he was. This catapulted The Texas Rattlesnake into superstardom. The following year, he usurp Shawn Michaels as WWF champion, as well as his best of three series with the Legendary Rock.
Shawn Michaels - Competing at 15 Wrestlemanias to date, he has been an integral part of this spectacular. He fought Scott Hall in one of the most grueling ladder matches, he went one hour against Bret Hart, made "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's career, had a memorable match against Chris Jericho, ended Ric Flair's career as well as many other encounters. He once refered to himself as Mr. Wrestlemania.
Triple H - Wrestling at 12 Wrestlemanias, he was a big part of the event. To me, his first big Wrestlemania moment was retaining the WWF championship at Wrestlemania 2000, though not his most memorable IMO. That came the following year when he took on The Undertaker in a losing effort. A personal favorite Wrestlemania match of his was against Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit at Wrestlemania XX(I was there). The fact that The Crippler made The Game tap out in front of 20,000 fans was an emotional moment. The following year, he made Dave Batista's career by being dethroned World Heavyweight Champion. Also elevated John Cena's career at Wrestlemania 22. Even though he lost alot of the time at the event(his record currently stands 5 to 7) you can't deny he played a huge part in the Wrestlemania saga.
The Undertaker - As of now, his undefeated streak at the event stands 16-0. He also has the title at competing at the most Wrestlemanias thus far. In his Wrestlemania encounters, he fought Kane(x 2), Triple H, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, Batista, and Edge. He won the World title 3 times as well. Will anybody ever stop this man's undefeated streak, only time will tell.
John Cena - Like him or hate him, this Future Hall of Famer has a pretty steady Wrestlemania track record. His only loss so far was against another future Hall of Famer in Randy Orton. Prior to that, he fought Big Show, JBL, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels, the latter two were hard fought matches. Its very likely he will provide us with more Wrestlemania moments.
Bret "The Hitman" Hart - Believe it or not, he hasn't had that many big Wrestlemania moments, but I will give this Hall of Famer a nod. His best matches were against Hall of Famer Roddy Piper, his brother Owen Hart, Shawn Michaels, and an up-and-coming "Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Edge - I wouldn't say he's at "Mr. Wrestlemania" status just yet, but he's getting there. His best matches would include TLC matches at Wrestlemanias 16 and 17, a hardcore match with Mick Foley at 22, a Money in The Bank match at 23, and a lost to The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 24. More will come from the Rated R Superstar.
So you see, many have brought moments to the event, but who in your opinon deserves to be referred to as "Mr Wrestlemania"? There's so many names I can't just pick one, but maybe others can help.
