I absolutely loved the movie but must confess I hadn't really heard the term used until the film was released awhile back.
I'm really into the films of the grindhouse variety as well and was just reading about the theaters on wikipedia.
They're pretty much gone today, but according to the entry there are a few left.
Anyone know if this is true, and do they play old films or what? Where are they?
If there are any, and they show old stuff, I wanna go.

They have an "art house"/ grindhouse in Eugene that plays stuff other, mainstream theaters won't touch with a ten foot pole.
Though even IT won't play blatantly pornographic material, like a TRUE grindhouse would.

There are a few independant theaters around Portland that will have the occasional grindhouse style marathon but by no means is it a constant. They mostly play artsy fartsy indy releases or newer flicks that have run their course in major theaters. The best I can do is Clinton Street, which still does the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday, not the same thing but still.

True grindhouses are dead and gone, my friend. There's no way that there'd be a theater that would operate like a 70's grindhouse would. Insurance companies would have heart attacks if they had one open. If there were, they'd more than likely be run-down second run theaters in bad neighborhoods.
There are places that at least show movies like that, places like the New Beverly in California, and, up until last month, the Two Boots theater in NY, but that had to close due to the rent skyrocketing. I actually had a theater similar to a grindhouse theater in Plattsburgh, but it was more because there were crappy seats and the place smelled like cat piss and not because it was full of pimps and gang members.
I was proud to see House Of 1000 Corpses there.

Is that place still going by the name "Bijou Cinemas"?

This is probably the closest I've seen since the 90s - think it's landmarked, to avoid the wrecking ball, and operates as a cinema mainly to stay under the radar of anti-porn ordnances in NYC - has a central auditorium that spools out westerns, bollywood movies, kung-fu marathons and, for a glorious month, the entire contents of a commercially released sword 'n' sandal boxed set - all just to provide the necessary non-porno usage to legitimise the porno booths in the lobby. Excellent. Don't know if it still operates almost around the clock, like it did when I saw ads for two Fred Williamson movies from the 70s... in 1999.
